Front Royal, Virginia Letter to the Editor |
The Herald is fortunate to have Russell Shaw's thoughtful commentaries, which reflect a lifetime of reflection on the Church's teaching.
In a recent column (which appeared while I was traveling), Shaw discerned a lack of public support in America for a bold pro-life political agenda. It seems to spell doom for any effort to change the status quo, he lamented. If anyone has an answer, "speak up," he said.
In response to the invitation, two observations: first of all, when the Supreme Court threw out laws restricting abortion in virtually every state, there was a lack of public support in America for their rabidly pro-abortion decision. Yet, because of a majority of support among the prestige press and assorted glitterati, the pro-life majority in the country was effectively cowed by a minority.
Second of all, even today the rabid pro-abortion minority fears that the masses might discover and focus upon the truth about what happens in an abortion. Their insistence on "choice" as their misleading term of art has nothing to do with what abortionists themselves describe as essential to every abortion "procedure."
In their recent challenge to Wisconsin's partial-birth abortion ban, abortionists finally let the cat out of the bag. In Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin v. Doyle (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, No. 98-2521) the pro-abortion doctors argue that the ban must be overturned because what happens in a partial birth abortion happens in every abortion! "Every" abortion includes the killing of an unborn child (er,....."fetus") in the womb, "every abortion! "every" abortion stills a beating heart, "every" abortion requires the abortionist to remove the torn limbs and torso (oops, the "contents") from the mother's womb, piece by piece, and reassemble the "dismembered parts of a living child" (also referred to as "products") on the operating table to make sure that no part, especially "living cells and a beating heart" was left behind.
Mr. Shaw, do not lose heart. What abortionists fear most is that Americans, in spite of the cultural temptation to ignore reality, will actually come to focus on the truth about abortion, as articulated not by "rabid anti-choicers" but by the abortionists themselves. They are running scared, Mr. Shaw, and they are running from the truth.
Now is not the time to be faint of heart in our support of the beating hearts of the unborn.

A note from the Web Master:
It is noteworthy and honorable that some folks are willing to stand up for a ban on Partial-Birth Abortion. Let us not forget that ordinary everyday run of the mill abortion is also murder. We must understand that aborting the life of a baby is murder no matter the method. Because one method of abortion seems to be horrible does not make the other methods less so. We should be horrified and sickened by any abortion regardless of the method. The Fifth Commandment spells it out clearly:
"Thou shalt not kill."
A fetus is a person, a human being with a God given soul.
Imagine the pain the Lord must feel when any abortion occurs. Please
contact both of your Senators and Representative, via letter or phone,
to let them know how horrified you are that abortions are legal and to
stop, once and for all, Partial-Birth abortions and all other abortions
as soon as possible.
