October Known for Rosary, Respect Life
          Respect Life Month

           By Father Charles Mangan
           Special to the HERALD

October – the month of the Holy Rosary. October – Respect Life Month. Could there be any better match than that between Our Blessed Lady, her powerful Rosary and the holy cause of defending human life and promoting its intrinsic sanctity?

To prayerfully recite the rosary is to recognize one’s utter submission to Almighty God. In fact, any time we sincerely pray, we show our dependence upon the Lord. Praying the Rosary not only fulfills the serious obligation we have to worship God and venerate our heavenly Mother but also allows us to express our heartfelt thanks, ask for forgiveness, state our petitions and offer our adoration – all done in acknowledgment of our absolute need of the creator and His assistance.

Mary’s entire existence has been lived out in the spirit. Never for a moment has she considered herself to be independent from the Lord. Glancing at her joyful Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55) reveals Our Lady’s unfeigned conviction that she – a humble maiden – was taken care of by the Lord of the universe: "… He has looked with favor on His lowly servant… the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His Name."

Those who have worked long and diligently to protect human life and foster its respect among others realize that the battle appears bleak at times. With nearly 40 million surgical abortions since 1973 in the United States alone, legalized abortion is a "right" in the views of millions of Americans. The massive conversion of mind and heart from the pro-choice position to the pro-life stance is difficult to effect.

More than ever, pro-life warriors must admit their own complete dependence on God, much like Mary. Human toil, necessary as it is, will not stop the abortion tragedy. Work and prayer combine for the only possible, lasting remedy for the abortion nightmare.

In combating the prevalent abortion mindset, truth is crucial; it must be enunciated at every opportunity. The critical distinction between surgical abortion (i.e. the surgical procedure performed in clinics and hospitals to end the life of a preborn child) and chemical abortion (i.e. the non-surgical use of devices and drugs to end the life of the preborn child) must be asserted. Even many of those who subscribe to the pro-life mentality are unaware that some of the so-called "contraceptives" actually are abortion-inducing (abortifacient) drugs and devices. Instead of prohibiting conception, these abortifacients work after conception, meaning that they kill the newly formed person, not preventing the egg and sperm from uniting.

If one is to pray and work with integrity for the eradication of abortion, then he must be prepared to unmask all abortions, including those which parade as contraception. The pill, Depo-Provera, Norplant, RU-486, the intrauterine device (IUD) and "emergency contraception" are exposed as death-dealing methods. Dr. Bogomir M. Kuhar provides irrefutable evidence of the abortifacient quality of these drugs and devices which are wrongly presented as contraceptives in his excellent "Infant Homicides through Contraceptives" (Eternal Life, P.O. Box 787, Bardstown, Ky. 40004-0787).

History demonstrates that when the faithful had recourse to the rosary, minds and hearts were transformed. St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), who tradition states was the author of the popular Memorare, believed in the mighty intercession of the Mother of Life: "Never was it know that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided." The very same Mother and her rosary can heal the wounds of abortion; the Gospel of Life is to become our society’s foundation, replacing the hideous culture of death.

We, the children of Mary, love life and confess our dependence on the Lord of Life to work the miracle we long for: the defeat of abortion. May He, through Our Lady of the Rosary, accept our prayers and good work and bring about the triumph of human life over the evil of surgical and chemical abortion.

"Lord God, our eternal Father, we come to Your throne, full of awe and reverence at Your saving power. Through our Saviour and Brother Jesus Christ, we beg You to help us stop the widespread slaughter of preborn life in our land. May our love for our innocent brothers and sisters help us provide all human life with protection under our civil laws. We fervently pray that all surgical and chemical abortions and contraception will immediately cease in our beloved country, the United States of America. We know that through the intercession of Mary our Mother, Chosen Spouse of the Holy Spirit, and St. Joseph, Chosen Spouse of Mary, our request will be granted. Through Christ our Lord. Amen."

A note from the Web Master:

It is noteworthy and honorable that some folks are willing to stand up for a ban on Partial-Birth Abortion.  Let us not forget that Abortion is also murder.  We must understand that murder is murder no matter the method.  Because one method of abortion seems to be horrible does not justify the other methods.  We should be horrified and sickened by any Abortion regardless of the method.  The Fifth Commandment spells it out clearly: "Thou shalt not kill."  A fetus is a person, a human being with a God given soul.  Imagine the pain the Lord must feel when any Abortion occurs.  Please contact both of your Senators and Representative, via letter or phone,  to let them know how horrified you are that Abortions are legal and to stop Partial-Birth Abortions and all other Abortions as soon as possible.
