NORWOOD AND BEATTIE IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

One Line or Two Lines?

I am a descendant of the Norwood family that went from Baltimore, MD to TN, and a large portion of the group ended up in Indianapolis, IN.

According to the Norwood Family Association Newsletters (of which I have an original copy) the following is speculated:

William Norwood (Ireland) b. ? d. 1790
Children:
John, William, Richard, George, Cecil Franklin, Margaret Ann, Bridget, and Jane were all born in Ireland. Margaret Ann married a John Beattie in Ireland. I found a ship's manifest showing that a Margaret Beattie came to Baltimore, MD in 1828. This history says she had 8 children. Her wealth upon arrival, it is told, was her 8 children and a little over $300.00 sewed up in her pettycoat for safety. The only child's name of the Beatties I have is Bridget. History says Bridget married in County Down, Ireland and had a son who was born in 1810.

I have tried for some time to pin down who lawyer John Norwood, born in Baltimore Co, MD, 14 July 1784, died 10 April 1838 in Madisonville, Monroe Co, TN, descended from. He married Sarah Crouch on 24 January 1803. In some places in the history he is referred to as John Norwood III and his father, John Norwood, Jr., who married Mary Hale (Haile) 17 June1782 in Baltimore, MD and moved from Baltimore to Tennessee in 1791. John was one of the first magistrates appointed for Washington Co, TN, by Governor Sevier in 1796. They are buried at Middle Settlement Campground, Blount Co, TN.

From there on back I am unable to make a connection. Some say his father was John Norwood, Sr. and others say it may be a William Norwood.

Do you know of anyone who else who might be researching the John Norwood/Mary Hale line?
