Lillie Annie Schlabach doesn’t remember being born, but she was and on the third day of November in 1892 in the small farming community of Shelby, Texas, in Austin County. 1A  Lillie’s father, William Schlabach, was born in Oldenburg,
Germany, and immigrated to Texas with his parents at the age of 11. 2A  It was in Shelby that William met Augusta Rudloff, also the daughter of a German immigrant, Christian Rudloff. 2B  William and Augusta were married about 1880, and began to raise their family of eight children.  Seven of their children were born in the German settlement of Shelby, but in 1895, William moved his family to Nordheim in De Witt County. However, a few years later William moved again to a new farm near Runge in Karnes County. 2C

About 1905, the St. Louis-Brownsville railroad was laid through Refugio
County and soon developers acquired some of the land to start a townsite.  William bought a section of the land and brought his family to Refugio
County in 1906.  The three eldest children stayed in Nordheim where they married soon afterward. 2D
