William was a merchant in Enniskillen and Londonderry, Ireland.
William Caldwell, son of John Caldwell
William and Elizabeth Huston (Houston) were married by John Hanford, Mayor of Londonderry, Ireland
John Caldwell, son of John Caldwell
John's 2nd wife, Mary Holmes, was the daughter of James Holmes and Jane
Jennings. Jane Jennings
was the daughter of Francis Jennings and Jean Scott of Co. Londonderry,
Ireland. John and Mary
were married by John Elwin, Mayor of Londonderry, Ireland.
James Caldwell, son of John Caldwell
James died in Castle Caldwell, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. This James is the same individual
who purchased the Castle in 1662. For more information, click on Castle
Caldwell. Pictures
of the Castle and a floor plan are also available with this Castle Caldwell information.
It is recorded that James was "High Sheriff" and was created a Baronet
(usually an new owner of land)
in 1683. His grandson, the Hon. James Caldwell (born Co. Tyrone,
Ireland in 1724), married Elizabeth
Alexander. The marriage took place in 1752 in Ireland. They emigrated
to America in 1769 and died in
Wheeling, West Virginia in 1800.
Joseph Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and Mary Holmes
Joseph married Jane McGhie, the daughter of Alexander and Jane Milliken,
at Co. Derry, Ireland. Joseph
served in the Defense of Derry and died in 1730, being buried on his
farm in Lifford, Ballycogan Parish,
County Donegal on 3 Sep 1730.
John Caldwell, son of Joseph Caldwell and Jane McGhie
Born in Lifford Parish of Ballycogan, County Donegal in 1683.
John and Margaret were married in
County Derry, Ireland on 4 Jan 1704. In 1727, John, his wife,
four sons and a daughter, emigrated to
America along with three married sisters and their husbands (Elizabeth
and James Moor, Jane and
Alexander Ritchey and Catherine and John Dudgeon). They arrived
at New Castle, Delware aboard
the ship EAGLE'S WING.
The family went first to Lancaster Co., PA. in an area known as
Chestnut Level. In approx. 1738
they moved to Lunenbeerg (now Charlotte) County, VA. It was known as
the Caldwell Settlement on
the Cub Creek area of Virginia. Some genealogy gives the date
for the family migration to Virginia as
about 1749, but it is duly recorded that the Cub Creek Church, which
celebrated its 250th anniversary
in 1986 was founded by James Caldwell in 1738.
Govenor Gooch of Virginia was pleased ot have the Caldwell Settlement
at such a distance from
Williamsburg because it would eliminate that much more of the wilderness
surrounding the coastal
areas. The pioneers were granted almost 30,000 acres, free muskets
and exemption from taxes for ten
years. Other members of the Caldwell family joined them and it
was there that son James was born on
18 Apr 1754. John Caldwell founded the Cub Creek Presbyterian Church,
becoming an Elder. John
and his son William were among the Justices of teh Peace in Lunenburg
Co., Virginia. In 1986, an article
was written by a descendant, Anabel Stogner, who visited the site of
the Caldwell Settlement in Virginia.
The original Presbyterian Church in the settlement burned in 1940 but
the stone foundation remained.
The cemetery was still in use but there were no headstones with the
name Caldwell on them. However,
there were many fieldstones that had been used as grave markers.
Captain John Caldwell died 6 Oct 1750 at Cub Creek, Virginia.
At the time of his death, he owned a
vast estate on Cub Creek and Lawes Creek of about 1080 acres.
He is buried with his sons William,
Thomas and David and most likely his wife who must have preceded him
in death, not being mentioned
in his will.
William Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips
William Caldwell served in the French and Indian War. He was commissioned
by George 3rd as the
first militia officer for the middle area of Virginia. Before
1765 his widow and children moved to an
area between Mill Creek and Mudlick Creek, Newberry County, on South
Carolina highway #65
east of the juncture with state highway #56. William died sometime
between 28 December 1758
when his will was written and 17 April 1761 when it was proved.
The following story is told of his wife Rebecca Parks Walkup Caldwell
(submitted to
DAR in 1974 by Ann Roy):
Rebecca Parqu (Park) was born 1707 in County Antrim, Ireland, the daughter
of a Hugenot refugee,
Jaques Parque (James Park). At the age of sixteen seh was married to
John Walkup, a marriage arranged
by her father and the groom who was 52 years old at the time.
Four months after the wedding, Rebecca
was a childless, penniless widow. In 1724 she married William Caldwell
in Ireland. William had been
schooled in Scotland at an early age and was considered educated, a
man intensely proud of his heritage
and possessing charm and tremendous physical strength. William and
Rebecca came to America in 1727
with the Caldwell family and had children born in PA and VA, Margaret
in 1728, Martha in 1730,
Rebecca in 1738, John in 1740, Eleanor, William Thomas in 1748, Sarah
and James in 1755, Elizabeth in
1757, and David Robert in 1760.
When William died in 1761 (in Virginia), leaving Rebecca with so many
young children, he stipulated
that their slave, Sambo, be her possession until her death. Within
the next ten years, the entire familyl had
moved to South Carolina and shortly thereafter the Revolutionary War
started.
During the War, a Tory by the name of Bloody Bill Cuningham swept through
the western side of
Newberry County, S.C. A negro gave the alarm that the Tories were coming.
James Creswell, afterward
to become Col Creswell, was at the Caldwell home at the time. Because
James Creswell was so openly
hostile to the Tories, Rebecca had to think fast. She told her daughter,
Elizabeth, to hide and dressed
James in the clothes of Elizabeth. She ordered horses to be saddled
for herself and her "daughter." As
the Tories approached the homestead, Mrs. Caldwell was seen calling
out, "Betsy, come along I am in
a hurry." Out walked Creswell, hiding his face under the bonnet. He
and Mrs. Caldwell mounted in the
presence of the Tories and rode away on a pretend visit to Mrs. Neely.
The Tories searched the area for James Creswell and found Elizabeth
in hiding. In retaliation, they
carried away most of the Caldwell household belongings. One of the
Tory remarked about the long
strides the pretender had taken to approach and mount the horse.
In the 98th year of her life, Rebecca Park Walkup Caldwell conceived
of a plan for a family reunion and
wanted every person of the family present. When she told her family
of her wish the reply was that there
was no house that could accomodate such a crowd. Her reply was, "I
have all my children near me
except those in Abbeville (William, James, Elizabeth, Dr. Martin, and
Sally, John Moore and Eleanor).
You all do not live in excess of five miles in a circle with
all your children and grandchildren in adjoining
districts. None lives so far that they can't find welcome in their
family's homes nearby. William, James
and David, build me a snug shelter in case of rain, for a dining hall
and a smaller one for the children to
play. I shall never meet them agian on earth. I am now 98 years old
and will be happy if you would give
me this pleasure before I die." Her plans were carried out.
Rebecca Caldwell died one year later in 1806 at the age of ninety-nine.
She is thought to be buried with
her son John who was killed by William (Bloody Bill) Cunningham.
That burial site is on the former
grounds owned by John Caldwell between Mudlick Creek & Little River,
Newberry Co., South Carolina.
Thomas Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips
Thomas served in the French and Indian War. He death date may be incorrect,
since he was not
mentioned in his father's will of 1750.
David Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips
David died between 19 Oct 1765 when he wrote his will, and 6 Mar 1769
when the will was proved.
Like his brother, Thomas (see above), David served in the French and
Indian War. His widowed wife,
Mary, moved to Kentucky.
John Caldwell, son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips
In the book, "Bicentennial History of Eleven Pioneer Families" by Mary
M. Beadles, page 105, this
John Caldwell is referred to as "John Caldwell of Flag Spring" and
his death is shown to be in
Halifax County, Virginia. It states his descendancy as shown
sbove.
John Caldwell, Jr., son of John Caldwell and Jane Kennedy
When John died in 1795, Nancy married Jesse Richardson. But on 1 Oct
1798 she married one
William Rice. We do not know what happened to Mr Richardson.
John Caldwell served in the Revolutionary War. That service is recorded
in Public Claims for
Halifax County, Indents 4 May 1782.
Allen Caldwell, son of John Caldwell, Jr.
Polly Tanner was the daughter of Matthew and Lucy Creed Tanner, which
would make Polly the sister
of Elizabeth Tanner (wife of Allen's brother David). Allen and Polly
are buried in Mr. Olive Church,
Bald Hill, Muscogee County, Georgia, 18 miles south of Columbus.
H. James Caldwell, DD., son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips
James was one of the founders of Princeton University. He was
described as a militant clergyman
during the Revolutionary War. He graduated from Princton in 1759 and
was ordained to the
Presbytery of New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1761. He became pastor of
the First Presbyterian
Church of Elizabeth. The loyalists offered a reward for the capture
of this patriotic clergyman. His
church, used as a hospital during the war, was burned in 1780. On 7
June 1780, Mrs. Caldwell was
killed by a stray British bullet during an invasion. James was shot
and killed on 24 Nov 1781 by an
American sentry in a dispute over a package James was carrying. The
sentinel was later tried and
sentenced to death for the shooting.
A son of James and Hannah Ogden Caldwell, John E. Caldwell, was educated
in France under the
sponsor ship of General Lafayette. Two other sons led in founding the
Siberian colonization and
gave the name to Caldwell, Siberia.
In 1846, a monument was erected in Elizabethtown, New Jersey in memory
of Rev. and Mrs.
James Caldwell.
Robert J. McJunkin, husband of Margaret Caldwell
Robert J. McJunkin was born between 1680 and 1685 in Dumphries Co.,
Port William, Scotland.
According to DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) records, he
came to America in
1741 with sons William and Samuel.
Andrus Caldwell, son of Joseph Caldwell and Jane McGhie
According to family records, Andrus emigrated to America in 1718, before
his brother John.
He settled in Lancaster County, PA where he married Ann Stuart.
