THE GAUGE:is the key to correct size.Tighter knitters use larger needles, loose knitters use smaller needles. Use thetype and weight of yarn that the directions call for, and the needles, so the work corresponds to the gauge given in the directions. Where two different types of yarn are suggested tile heavier will produce the larger size.
How To READ THE PATTERN. Read the pattern on the diagram from right to left. Each square on the diagram represents one stitch. Where only a part of the pattern is given, repeat the same sequence of stitches across the row. How TO KNIT with SEVERAL Colors. When you are ready to start the pattern, do not tie on the new color. Leave an end about 4 inches long hanging loose. These loose ends may be fastened with a tapestry needle on the wrong side of the knitting when the knitting is finished. As you work, carry the yarn you are not using loosely at the back of the work Twist the yarn you carry around the yarn you use if the yarn is carried more than five stitches. In some patterns, however, it is well to twist the yarn when it is carried more than 3 stitches. This is indicated in the directions for that pattern. Do not break the yarn unless the color is discontinued or does not reappear. THE KITCHENER STITCH. To join knitting, for instance the toe of sock, leave the stitches for the instep on one needle and for the sole (the same number) on a second needle. Thread the yarn left (about 1:5 inches on a tapestry needle. With the yarn attached to the needle away from you (the back needle) start on the needle near you (the front needle) as follows. *Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch of the front needle as if to knit and slip this stitch onto the tapestry needle insert the tapestry needle into the second stitch of the front needle as if to purl pull the yarn through but leave the stitch on the knitting needle (Go to the back needle, being careful to have the yarn taken under the needle each time. Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch of’ the back needle as if to purl, take this stitch off onto the tapestry needle, put the tapestry needle through the second stitch of the back needle as if to knit, pull the yam through, but leave the second stitch on the knitting needle.* Repeat from * to * until all the stitches are joined. Do not draw the yarn too tightly. The stitches should have the same tension as the knitted stitches. Fasten the end securely. To Finish SOCKS and put on leather soles If the sock is made in two pieces, sew it up before you press it. The soles used with these socks have fleece bottoms and plain leather edges. The edges may he dyed to match one of the colors in the sock pattern, but this should be done before the sock is attached. Use two coats of leather dye. To attach the sole to the sock, first pin the heel of the sock to the heel of the sole matching the center backs. Do the same with the toe. Then baste the sole to the sock, following the outline of the pattern except at the gusset where the outline comes slightly above the sole. It is well to take the trouble to baste before the actual sewing. With a tapestry needle and two strands of yarn (the background or the pattern color) sew together using a blanket stitch. Remove the basting thread.
