OBITUARIES
FROM THE CHESTERFIELD ADVERTISER, 1927 - 1931,

researchers know, genealogical research in this county can be difficult.
During General Sherman's visit to the area in 1865 the courthouse records
burned. Many researchers find various and sundry substitutes for these
burned records. One of the best methods is to use obituaries to look back
in time. Jim Pigg's latest volume is a continuation of his first volume of
obituaries from the ADVERTISER. Each obituary contains information that enables
researchers to ascertain facts concerning each person's life. One of the items
of particular interest is the passing of each Confederate veteran.
July 11, 1929 issue, page 1, col. 4: Another of Chesterfield's grand old
gentlemen who wore the grey [sic] has answered the final summons and joined the
vast army on the other short. Mr. W.W. Davis of the Zoar section, answered the
last "taps" and fell asleep...Tuesday evening. Eighty-two years of
age...He enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 16, was seriously
wounded and captured....He was married three times and is survived by his
present wife and the following children: Mr. J.J. Davis, Mrs. Minnie Mauldin,
Mrs. W.R. Winfree, Mr. W.W. Davis, Mrs. A.G. Gardner, Mrs. Irene Miller, Mr. C.E.
Davis, Mrs. Bessie Griggs, Mr. E.D. Davis, Mrs. Thurman B. Teal, Messrs. J.
Colon Davis, Hoy W. Davis, and Leo F. Davis and a very extensive family
connection.
