The Darlington Flag Newsletter
GENEALOGICAL EXTRACTS FROM THE DARLINGTON
HERALD, JULY 16, 1890 THROUGH
NOVEMBER 2, 1894,
by Robert M. DeFee...Until
recently the only way to access copies
of the Darlington Herald was to visit the Darlington County
Historical Commission.
Through the efforts of the Darlington County Historical
Commission, the Old Darlington
District Chapter, SCGS, and the South Caroliniana Library,
all extant issues of this
short-lived paper have been microfilmed.
(This film is available for viewing at the
Hartsville Genealogical Research Library.)
To further increase the accessibility of the
information with genealogical and historical value, Robert M.
DeFee has extracted
hundreds of marriage, death and legal notices from these
newspapers. This information
becomes even more valuable when one considers the loss of the
1890 Census. Three
such notices from the 7 September 1892 Herald are given
below:
TO
BE MARRIED
Cards are out for the marriage of Mr. G. W. Brown and Miss Hattie Ervin, which will occur at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening, September 14th.
DIED
Mr. Edwin Early, the father of Messrs. B. A., W. F., and T. E. Early, died at the residence of Mr. B. A. Early on Tuesday night. He was almost ninety years old and his death was due to the infirmities of old age.
MARRIED
Mr. Chas. C. James and Miss Mink Kirby were married on Sunday afternoon by the
Rev. J. A. Rice.
Coupled with
DeFee’s previous abstracts from the Darlington News (1890 – 1895),
this new publication helps to complete a genealogical
snapshot of the critical 1890’s.
Fortunately for all Darlington researchers, DeFee has
three additional newspaper
abstract books at various stages of completion.
