The
Darlington Flag Newsletter
Miscellaneous Abstracts from
Pre-Civil War Cheraw, South Carolina Newspapers, by
James C. Pigg. Do
you have an ancestor who lived in Chesterfield County, SC between 1823 and 1857?
Are you having difficulty in finding information on this ancestor because
of the absence of extant Chesterfield records?
If the answer to these two questions is yes, then this book is for you.
As the title implies, Jim Pigg has abstracted a variety of items from
Cheraw newspapers between the dates 1823 and 1857.
Included in these abstracts are obituaries, marriage notices, sheriff’s
sales, estate notices, equity notices, coroner’s sales, notices of land sales,
Common Plea notices, Slave sales, etc. The
neighboring counties of Darlington, Marlboro, Lancaster, and Anson County (NC)
are also mentioned in many of these notices.
The newspapers of Cheraw regularly published legal notices for these
counties. The value of these
notices to the genealogist was greatly enhanced when the probate records of
Chesterfield were lost at the end of the War Between the States.
No serious Chesterfield researcher can afford not to have access to this
information. Again, Jim and Julie
Pigg are to be commended on their efforts to make Chesterfield District more
accessible to genealogists. Soft
cover, full name index. Price: $20.00 plus
$4.00 shipping for first book and $1.50 for each additional book.
