DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD EDGEWORTH
DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD EDGEWORTH,
by James C. Pigg. Jim Pigg is well known among Chesterfield researchers
for the wide variety of books he has published. Until now these books have
made available to researchers various Chesterfield primary and secondary
resources (census records, wills, death certificates, newspapers, etc.).
In his latest book, Pigg has shifted gears and written a genealogy of a family. Several
previous books have been written on the well-known Richard Lovell Edgeworth of
Edgeworthstown, Ireland. These include The Ingenious Mr. Edgeworth and Memoirs
of Richard Lovell Edgeworth. Pigg’s book follows the family of
Richard Edgeworth of Chesterfield County. Richard was
the son of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, “a gentleman of varied interests and
attainments,” and the brother of Maria Edgeworth a 19th century writer.
This current book is divided into two parts. The first part is a biography
of Richard Edgeworth (Poor Dick) the immigrant, written by Dr. Edgar E.
MacDonald. This section benefits from the many letters written by members of the Edgeworth family that are included. These letters
provide an insight into life in 18th century South and North Carolina. Included in this
section is also the will of Richard Edgeworth (recorded in Anson County, NC). Part two of this book
provides a genealogy of the Edgeworth family with extensive notes. Pigg
has compiled an excellent family history in this section. Numerous examples
of deeds, obituaries, tombstone records, wills, census records, and other
sources are cited as this family is documented through the years.
Intermarriages with the Knight, Evans, Carpenter, Helms, Ray, Parsons, Brewer,
Ogburn, Dunn, Kirkley, Rivers, Baker, Graves, Sowell, McDonald, Lampley, and
Horton families (as well as numerous others) are well documented. The
reviewer hopes that this genealogy is the advent of others from Jim Pigg.
Again he has added to the information available on this burned county. ©
