Pritchardia martii is native to the island of O`ahu. It grows on the leeward side of the Ko`olau Mountains. Normally you may think of the Leeward side as dry, but not in this case The upper reaches of the ridges and valleys of the Koolaus are very wet and receive more than 150 inches of rain a year.

I bought this palm from a friend here on O`ahu. At the time it was in a 6" round pot and was about 8" tall. It went into the ground sometime in 1998 after moving up thru a few sizes of pots. This picture was taken in November of 1998. The palm is planted in the shade of a Kukui Nut tree (aleurites moluccana). Since planting I have been told that it could have taken full sun. But what the heck it looks good here!

This picture taken in December of 1999 shows some growth, but not a whole lot. This is a "dwarf" Pritchardia and should only reach a height of 10-15 feet. This picture is taken from a different angle than the above picture and thus is not really a good comparison.

I believe you can see some growth this year. To bad I can't get the exposure setting right.
