The Cross Is Bare
by Barbara Philbrook

The cross is bare there is no one there,
but if it could talk what a marvelous tale it could share.

It could tell us how the prisoner was made to lug it all alone,
it could tell of the sins that his death would atone.

We could hear how the savior suffered as the spikes were driven in,
and that is nothing compared to the suffering when he would be enshrouded in darkness because of our sin.

There would be the tale of the crown made of  thorns,
and the look on his Mother's face so sad and forlorn.

Of course we'd be told of the gambling to see who would get the robe,
and the story of how there was a hole in his side through which they could probe.

We'd hear of the two robbers who also were hanging on crosses that day,
we'd hear how one mocked him and the kind words the other did say.

There would be the talk Jesus had with his friend John,
and how he asked him to help his Mother to carry on.

Then we'd hear how he being thirsty asked for a drink,
they offered him vinegar  they'll not be residents of Heaven or so I think.

The sins of the world were such that for a time he felt separated from his father,
I believe that of all that Jesus suffered nothing would be harder.

Then when his time was to come to an end,
"It is finished" he declared just as his head fell forward and his neck did bend.

Lovingly his friends lowered him and laid him in a borrowed grave all alone,
and the opening was guarded besides being covered by a large stone.

Now I'm not sure how much more the cross would be able to tell,
but ask any Christian we all know it so well.

Yes the cross is bare now and unfortunately it has no voice,
but God through his love for us sees to it that we all hear the story and are able to make the choice.

Won't you take time to read it on your own,
the story is found in the Bible and it's truthfulness is well known.
