Three Spikes
by Barbara Philbrook

When you look at the spikes what do you see,
are they reminders that He died for you and me?

Do you see the method by which He hung on the cross,
do they remind you of the terrible loss?

Can you recall the tale of the beating and shame,
can you feel anger at those to blame?

Are there tears in your eyes as you think on his pain,
do they fall freely or do you refrain?

Can you almost picture the mallet come down on each,
as through the human skin they breach?

These and other negative thoughts have come to me,
so I asked God to give these spikes new meaning you see.

Now when on these spikes I look,
I'm reminded of the love His sacrifice took.

When I count them one two three,
I'm reminded of the Father Son and Holy Spirit you see.

When I picture the holes they left behind,
I see another portal through which Heavenly light can shine.

When I think of the sound of the mallet that day,
I remember "Forgive Them Father" is what Jesus did say.

If tears gather before they can fall,
I'm reminded Jesus died for us one and all.

The spikes were intended to cause the death of a king,
but life eternal for all is what they did bring.

The three spikes may to some cause a painful sting,
but Praise God these spikes remind me that in Glory I'll one day sing.
