We Never Know
by Barbara Philbrook

We never know from day to day,
when a loved one will be taken away.

Taken by the hand of one who drank and drove,
thinking they were capable to be on the road.

A precious loved one who will never grow old,
nothing but a sad tale left to be told.

Never to graduate or go to the prom,
never become a loving wife or mom.

Couldn't be an attendant in her sisters' wedding,
though  its years later still there's tears we're shedding.

Now we don't tell this for our benefit,
we repeat it hoping others will learn from it.

Learn there are consequences for behavior,
and that from a life of pain we wish to save ya.

Little boys and girls deserve to age naturally,
so if you've been drinking remember me.

Consider the children's right to grow,
let someone  else take you where you need to go.

Melissa knew God and shared His truth,
who knows what she could have done had she survived her youth.

Give the chance to others Melissa never had,
no mother or sister should feel so sad.

Give the children an opportunity,
if you've been drinking give someone else your key.
