This is our bird sancturay in our back yard. It is visited by a variety of birds throughout the year. The yellow finch is a winter bird only and arrives here about mid January. The male finch is very dull brownish yellow when they arrive and gradually changes to a bright yellow coat with black around its beak and on its wing. The finches favorite food here is the sunflower seed.
Some of the birds that visit our feeders and bird bath the entire year are: The tufted titmouse, blue jay, mourning dove, common ground dove and the red cardinal. The above birds like to feed on sunflower seeds. The blue jay especially likes unsalted peanuts in the shell. We also have many species of the woodpecker family visit, they are: common flicker, red headed woodpecker, and ocassionaly the pileated woodpecker. The woodpecker likes to feed on sunflower seeds and unsalted shelled peanuts. This group of birds that visit our bird sanctuary feed on the ground on insects. The carolina wren, brown thrasher, the gray catbird and many, many more.
