THE SETTLERS
They left their homeland forever
From Dorking to Brighton they came
Sailing the wild seas together
To a land they knew only by name.
|
At Port Phillip Bay they alighted
A new way of life they did seek
They walked until Brighton was sighted
The end of their journey seemed bleak.
|
The bush gave them shelter that night
Strange sounds did lull them to sleep
Bravely they woke at first light
From beds made of saplings did creep.
|
The timber they cut for their dwelling
The land they cleared for their crop
Their visions were slowly unfolding
As Brighton they helped to develop.
|
Their families they grew in their number
Although many died by the way
The old folk dreamt in their slumber
Of a green land from whence they did stray.
|
The old settlers have gone long ago
Their families now carry the load
To reap what their ancestors did sow
For their journey along lifes road.
