Girl Scout History Fact Sheet
  1. Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., was born October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Georgia, and died there January 17, 1927. She was known as Daisy to her family and friends.

  2. In 1911 in England Juliette met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. One year later she returned to America and on March 2, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia held the first Girl Scout meeting in the U.S.A.

  3. Sir Robert Baden-Powell started scouting in England in 1910. He married Olave Soames in 1912 and she became actively involved in the Scouting movement. Lord and Lady Baden-Powell had the same birthday, February 22, and this became "Thinking Day" in memory of the founder of scouting.

  4. The movement rapidly spread around the world and in 1928 the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) was formed. By 1996 there were 136 member countries in WAGGGS.

  5. In 1932, Our Chalet, the first WAGGGS World Center was officially opened in Switzerland. In 1939, the second World Center, Our Ark, was opened in England. In 1959 Our Ark was moved and renamed Olave House. Then in 1984 the England World Center was moved again and renamed Pax Lodge. In 1957 Our Cabaņa was opened in Mexico. The fourth World Center, Sangam, was opened in Pune, India in 1966.
