Ivermectin Treatment

Used & Recommended by The Cavy Castle

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

1 tube of Zimecterin Paste {Ivermectin 1.87%} used for horses.
Q-tips with the cotton tip removed from one end.

TREATMENT:

Three (3) treatments are necessary to kill all adult and young mites.  Give the initial dose and repeat a like dose in two (2) weeks.  Dose again two (2) weeks from the date of the second dose.

This three part treatment should be administered prior to show season with the last dose given before your first show. This way your cavies have maximum protection.  Treat twice a year - Spring and Fall.

NOTE: It has been suggested by a local Vet that during the "Show Season" an additional, one-time dose of Ivermectin may be given once every four (4) weeks.  This should guarantee that your cavies remain free of mites that are attending the shows on the competition!  This prevention dose should be started four (4) weeks after the last treatment {3rd} dose.  Remember to give the cavies 'Time Off' during the off seasons of Summer and late Winter.

DO NOT TREAT NURSING OR EXTREMELY PREGNANT SOWS.
DO NOT TREAT NURSING KITS.

Minimum age for treatment - a four (4) week old, weaned kit.

To administer a dose of Ivermectin, open the syringe like tube the paste comes in and push the syringe plunger until the paste is easily accessible.  Scoop out enough paste to just cover the top of the Q-tip Stick {Fig. 1}  This is a good dose to give any adult Cavy (27 ozs. and over).  For younger animals, cut the dose in half {Fig. 2}.  Once you have done a few cavies, you'll be able to judge just how much to give each animal.  The rule of thumb is easy:  big cavy, full dose; and small cavy, baby dose.
