CLAYPOOLE

The Claypoole family, however it is spelled is an old one and was quite prominent in England in the days of the English Civil War. The first one of the name to come to the United States and settled in Philadelphia, PA, and was a friend of William Penn and was a prominent merchant. For the information on some of the spreading branches of this tree and for help in making sense of it all, I am much indebted to Evelyn (CLAYPOOL) BRACKEN. She was the author of THe Claypoole Family in America. I have also received much help from Samuel Claypool, who has updated the above work and added a lot of modern material.

As you can see, many important Claypoole events from this period -- marriages, baptisms, burials -- occurred at the Parish Church of St. Andrew, Northborough. More information is available on this historic church.

From this point we follow two of the sons, James and Norton, who are the progenitors of most of the Claypoole/Claypool/Claypole families in the United States.

I have been researching diligently to determine whether my husband's line traces to the grandson of James 1634-1687 or the grandson of Norton c1640-1688. I have heard arguments in both directions, some leaning one way and some the other. The two men lived within a few miles of each other and were born within a very years of each other. So far, I have not seen any proof that settles my mind for certain. The search continues.

From this point on the line is clear.
