The President's Corner

{short description of image}I have been the President of the Spenard Lions Club for three weeks now, and even though District Governor Shirley Littleton has visited us for lunch, she has not demanded my resignation for incompetence. Lion Dennis still comes to our lunches, and the Board has granted me all of my wishes. I am still here, and I want to thank each and every Spenard Lion for their support, their wisdom, and their confidence in me.

As President, I have set forth a vigorous agenda.

First, I ask every Spenard Lion to bring in one Lion this year. The Lions have helped me so much in many ways, and I feel that we should not deny any non-Lion the fun, the work, and the experience of being a Lion.

Second, I have requested our public relations members to pull out all stops regarding the exposure of Lionism to the community. Currently, the Club brochure is being revamped, and a “PR” poster board, to be displayed at Club activities, is being developed.

Third, I am committed to finding the Spenard Lions a new club house. Our club house chairman has looked at one building this month, and two others are being considered.

Forth, the Spenard Lions Club and Mount McKinley Lions Club are working together on Convention 2000. We hope to throw the best convention ever, one filled with surprises and fun.

Fifth, The Spenard Club will be 50 years old in 2000. We want to make our anniversary dinner a night to remember. Finally, I will be making a challenge to every Lions' Club in the Anchorage bowl area. I dream of having a Meet the Lions Day and asking the City of Anchorage proclaim it Lions' Day. I hope our District Governor will embrace this idea and give us the go-ahead to start the ball rolling.

Yours in Lionism,
Michael Curley President

Livewire Club Goes World Wide {short description of image}

The Spenard Lions Livewire Club has recently established a presence on the “World Wide Web”. Our new web address is: http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/Forest/9291. Hopefully, this web site will bring to our readers and fellow Lions a sense of what our “Livewire Club” is all about. At this point, the pages are in what most would consider the construction stages and we need your help. Please help us by writing an article for the web site.

If you would be interested in submitting information that could be placed on our web site or have questions concerning our club, please e-mail us at: mailto:livewire@pobox.alaska.net.

Volunteers

Many will be shocked to find,
When the day of judgment nears,
That there's a special place in Heaven set aside for volunteers.
Fumished with big recliners,
Satin couches and foot stools,
Where there are no committee chairmen,
No yard sales, or rest area coffee to serve,
No library duty, or bulletin assembly,
There will be nothing to print and staple,
Not one thing to fold and mail.
Telephone lists will be outlawed.
But a finger snap will bring cool drinks and Gourmet dinners
And rare treats fit for a king.
You ask, "Who'll serve these privileged few,
And work for all they're worth?"
Why, all those who reaped the benefits,
And not once volunteered on Earth

Re-Meet The Lions Potluck and Ice Cream Social

{short description of image} On July 23rd, we held a "Re-Meet the Lions" potluck, Bar-B-Que andsensational Ice Cream Social. We had Lions from a number of different Clubs. It seemed that with everyone joining in to provide the provender, the evening was especially relaxed. It was great to have a chance just to visit. NLSG, Joe Koss, who did a great job as our impromptu Grill Master. He proved that he not only makes a sensational deviled egg, he is a mean hand at the Barby! The salmon provided by Lion Fred proved to be a success once again.

We used the evening as an opportunity to show some monetary support for Lion John Regan's impending run for Vice District Governor. Lion Charlotte made some great “VDG” posters and a donation can. We might get a bit more aggressive indicating the availability of a donation can.It certainly looked as though everyone had a great time. Lion President Skippy certainly did, and his sidekick, Lion Michael, had a fine time acting as Lion Greeter.

If you had a good time , please let your "Prez" know. With Club support we can do potlucks more often. If you didn't make it to the extravaganza, we hope you do next time. We would truly like to Meet and Re- Meet all of our Lions.

From The Editor

Putting this newsletter together is fun and exciting and I personally hope you enjoy the content. Without the contributions of written material from our “fellow” Livewire members, it would not be possible to produce such a publication. I would like to thank Michael Curley, John Regan, Doyle Burnett and Kathleen Conley for submitting articles and Joanne Koss for her idea related to “Name That Livewire”. Without the help of others, I could not put a newsletter together .

If you have a story to tell about Lionism, please share it with others. With this in mind, I plan on starting a sign-up-sheet where “fellow” Livewire members can sign up to write articles for the proceeding months’ newsletter. Remember, we also need photographs!

If you send me articles via e-mail, please be sure to send them as attachments (text in Rich Text Format and graphics in either GIF or JPEG).

In The Next Issue...Name That Livewire

Have you ever wanted to win a free lunch? Well, here’s your big chance. Joanne Koss has come up with what sounds like a fun idea...Name That Livewire.

Here’s the scoop...we need baby pictures of Livewire club members. Each month a picture of one of “our own” will be posted in the monthly newsletter. Your job, should you decide to play along with us, will be to identify the club lovely of the month

Any baby pictures you might have of yourself or other club members should be submitted to Joanne. In the September issue we will make available the entry rules along with our first baby Livewire.

So...get those pictures handed in...you could win a free lunch.
