January 2000 Newsletter
The President's Corner
January
2000 is upon us. Y2K was a total bust. Now I have to get rid of my Meals
Ready to Eat, my 2,000 rounds of duck shot, one generator, and sixty
gallons of ice in zip lock bags, that was to be our drinking water. Darn.
With the holidays over, we are all taking a short breather before the work begins again. Lions Joanne Koss and Lee Ann Regan are beginning to feel the Convention 2000 crunch. Soon, it will be time to really get involved in our Convention.
Lion Milo has offered to chair a sock hop sometime in the near future. That should be a fun event. I can't dance without falling over or hurting someoneelse, but I could play the disco music.
Our 50th anniversary dinner is already being planned by Lion Lee Ann Regan.
We also have a commitment to help the ADA in their Micro-brew contest, and to perform our cleanup duties for the Miners and Trappers Ball. So much to do and so little time. Here and now, I ask every Spenard Lion to get off your butts and on a Committee and help us achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves. Time is growing short, and more Lions are needed immediately.
Tonight, I attended the Spenard Club Leo meeting. It looks like the project is finally off the ground. Eight prospective Leos attended the meeting with several more in the wings. Special thanks to Lion Lauri Hilton for her extreme;y valuable help in this special program.
I would like to welcome two new Lions into the Spenard Lions Club. Welcome, Lion Jim Minton and Lion Shawn Welch. Lion Jim is leaving shortly for Viet Nam. He will be installing a solar panel system on a hospital for children affected by the Agent Orange used during the Viet Nam war. Lion Shawn has been very active with me getting computers ready for the blind computer program.
That is about it for this month. For the record, Lion John Regan has not sold his 2,000 rounds of squirrel shot yet. That squirrel is not the only thing that survived the Y2K crisis. Thank you all for your efforts this last month. Everyone try to get healthy and stay that way!

Lion Kathleen and Charlotte have worked on the design for the 50th Anniversary Pin. It looks like its going to be a winner and we will be asking for your approval for the final design.
President Michael and Lauri Hilton are working on putting together the Leo's Club. Lion Laura has been to the Boy Scouts and the Boys and Girls Club soliciting members and has put in more than 10 hours of work on putting this new Leo's Club together. Looks like we should have something going before the end of January if all the pieces fall in place.
This month the Spenard Lions donated $1000 to the Museum of Transportation History this is the where the Clubs 49th Rescue Wagon is on display.A big thank you to the Bristol Environmental & Engineering who donated 9 computers to the Club. President Michael said that these have already been worked on and given out. Which brings to mind that Lion David Olaska has put in another 20 hours working on the computers. New Lion Shawn Welch has put in hours working on fixing up the basement for an area where they can work on the computers. This is another example of Lions that work behind the scenes that deserve a big thanks. Thanks David, Thanks Shawn!

Leo News by Michael Curley
January 9, 2000. An important day for the Spenard Lions Club. Our first Leo meeting occurred at the Club House and eight Leo candidates showed up. Also present at this meeting were Lion John Kelly, District Leo CO-chair, Lion Terri Grohon, Bear Valley Leo advisor, Lions Michael Curley and Lauri Hilton, Spenard Leo advisors, three Bear Valley Leos, and two parents of prospective Leos.
At this meeting, Lion Terri gave a presentation on what it is to be a Leo. Lion Kelly spoke to the group and explained the benefits of being a Leo. After the presentation, all of the kids got together and made a list of projects that they want to perform. The prospective Leos also made a list of Officers, and it was agreed that any office position getting more then one candidate would require a debate between the candidates. It was also decided that the Leo meetings will be held each Sunday at 4:00 PM.
During the next meeting, the kids will select their Officers, vote on a project, and learn some of the proper ways to run a meeting. Lions John Regan, Kathleen Conley, and Cosego helped set up a nice sandwich and pizza lunch.
In the next newsletter, a detailed description of our Leo Club will be printed.
From The Editor by Mady Burnett
I would like to thank those Spenard LIONS club members who continue contributing to the monthly newsletter. Those members are President LION Michael Curley, Treasurer LION John Regan, Secretary LION Charlotte Henke, LION Joanne Koss, and of course without whose help we would not have the newsletter our Non-LION Support, Doyle Burnett. All of the above mentioned have been very diligent in sending in articles for the newsletter without any fusing at all.
I know it is very hard to take the time to write and send in an article for the newsletter; however, it is a very important and necessary item to keep our club members in touch with other clubs. If you have wanted to submit an article but did not have any ideas as to what to write about here are a few suggestions. You could submit you favorite recipe; you could write a little bit about yourself without identifying yourself. If you write as a mystery author, other club members could try to guess who you are.
I may start to call a LION member of the Spenard LIONS without notice. So be a little prepared to say a few things about yourself. Another suggestion could be someone could write some great places to visit either here in our local area or outside during the summer. There may be some camp places that some of us do not know about. What about that favorite fishing lure or some great fish tale. I am wanting to give members of the club an opportunity to learn more about our individual histories, where we came from and even an opportunity to stretch the truth (only related to fishing as that is accepted).
Be the first on your block to submit a newsletter article!
