July Newsletter

Our president, Michael

The President's Corner

Last Sunday, July 9th, it was all made official. The new year has begun, Spenard has a new Board of Directors and Officers, and now it is time for the fun to begin.

My goals this year are simple. I will be asking every member of the Club to become involved in at least one project. To help get all of this going, I am also going to establish a communications network that will be relentless in their pursuit of wayward Lions.

My personal goal this year is to find us a new home, or get the City of Anchorage to let us lease this lot so that we may build our new Den. We are out of room as all of you are aware.

Plans are being made to invite both Benton Bay and Mount McKinley to use our Club for their meetings on Mondays and Tuesday. Both Clubs will have a home, and they will save on their meal costs. I hope the Board will approve this action. Welcome District Governor Lion Dennis Cummings. Spenard looks forward to working with you this year. Also, thanks to the Spenard Lions who are members of District 49A Cabinet. Lions Joanne Koss, Zone 4 Chair; Royce Larson, Historian; Kathleen Conley, District Newsletter Editor; Michael Curley, Leader Dog Chair; Milo Mujagic, Extension Chair; and last but certainly not least our own Vice District Governor, Lion John G. Regan, Jr..

Our Awards Dinner/BBQ was a resounding success. Congratulations to each award recipient, and especially to Lion Kathleen Conley, Spenard Lion of the Year, who reminds us on a daily basis of our motto: We Serve.

I look forward to working with every Lion this year to make this a great year for Spenard. This is our 50th year of service to the community and let's all work hard to make it a year that no one will forget. Special thanks go out to Lion Mady and NSLG Doyle Burnett for their publication of the Spenard Lions Newsletter. Keep up the great work.

Yours in Lionism,

Lion Michael Curley President Last

Spenard Lions 10th Annual Fish Fry

All area Lions are invited to attend the Spenard Lions 10th Annual Fish Fry. The date and time for this event will be Aug. 26th., 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spenard Lion Club House, 2108 Roosevelt Dr. Thanks again to Lion Fred Walatka for donating the salmon. See back page for more info!

From Our International Director

I want to thank all of the Lions and their families that went to Hawaii and took the time to help me with the campaign. I could not have done it without you. Cheryl and I appreciate you all.

We promised to keep everyone informed on what we are doing, so here is the first installment.

On August 4th, Cheryl and I and Cheryl’s mom, Lion Gwen (newly installed Spenard Lion), hit the road for Whitehorse and DG Seann’s 1st Cabinet Meeting and Council Meeting.

Then on August 19th, we head for Rochester, Michigan, to Leader Dogs for the Blind. This is our 36th wedding anniversary, and who could ask for a better present than this trip. We will be sure to let you know what happens there.

In September we go to the USA/Canada Leadership Forum. Then we turn around and go to Chicago and Lions Int’l Headquarters on September 28 & 29 for more orientation.

Right after that, on October 1st, is the first Int’l Board of Directors Meeting. So, we will be spending 4 or 5 days more in Chicago.

I will keep you informed of ideas and information as it comes to me. We are in this together. You all got me here, it is the least I can do to keep you in the know.

Thank you for all of the support and love.

Your Director, Lion Buster

No Perfect Solution

There is no perfect solution and I realize that at times I may have to grin and bare it. “So, what’s your point some may ask?”

As a blind individual, I cannot re-count the numerous times I have been asked to do something and not have a clue. Imagine being told to face the flag for the “pledge: and have no clue where the darn thing is located. It’s not an easy thing to learn things in reverse, but often times we as blind individuals are told to go left when the actual direction should have been right. Obviously, this is because someone was facing me and gave the correct direction from their standpoint. Usually, they correct their statement and I get headed in the correct direction.

During the most recent American Council of the Blind conference, I had asked where the sweetener was located at the table. I was told the sweetener was in front of me, but was totally uninformed about the chocolate cream pie...guess not many were interested in the pie after that incident. As you can see, it is important to be very specific with those of us who have limited vision. Most of us will accept your help.

Livewires In The News

Lion Iwalani Carino was appointed Membership Chairman and Lion Gwen Watts was appointed for two year Director.

Our Installation dinner was great, food was super, and all had a great time. We had between 76 to 80 people attend and many Clubs were represented.

Lions Royce Larson, Bob Hanson and Evan Hall were award Lifetime Memberships. It is an honor that the Spenard Lions wanted to bestow and our thanks to active longtime Lions. Lion's Peter Hupperton and Jack Doyle were the only other Lifetime Members present.

Lion Louise Dolan Dunn was award her five member key award. Many other awards were given out by the Spenard Lions President, Michael. This was his way of saying, "Thank You" to the many Lions that helped him throughout the year.

Lion Kathleen Conley was taken by surprise as she read that she was named the "Lion of the Year." Thanks to all of you for your support last year and lets see what we can accomplish this coming year.
