Benjamin Burgess arrived in Southport (now Kenosha) Wisconsin in 1836. He died two years later from complications from those first Wisconsin winters. Benjamin and his wife Amanda started a saw mill on the Pike river near the town of Somers in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. The site of the saw mill is on the land described as the South West quarter of Section One Town Two North, of Range Twenty-Two East containing 160 acres. The land was officially transfered to Amanda Burgess by the United States on November 15, 1838 on certificate number 1018. The land was transfered for the United States by President John Tyler. This information is contained in the Abstract of Title number 48533, for the land.

Amanda Foster was the second wife of Benjamin Burgess. Her father was one of the early settlers of Southport. Benjamin and Amanda and their children traveled with her father from NY to Wisconsin in 1836. Amanda was listed as head of the household in the 1850 census of the city of Kenosha. Her age was shown as 51. Living with her were her children Martha age 17, Belinda age 15, and Cyris age 11. All were born in NY except Cyris who was born in Wisconsin in 1839. Her obituary stated that she had six children, three of which were alive at the time of her death.
