This poem was written by Nancy Penn and expresses the last feelings of a horse sent to slaughter.
"I Remember"
I remember a time of happiness
I remember a time of joy
I remember a time when I was
Someone's "special boy".
I remember when I couldn't wait
For "my friend" to come and play
I'd wait forever at that gait
I'd wait all night and day
But someone mean came instead
and jerked me into a truck
that took me far from my friend
never imagined such unluck
I can't remember who I was
Only know now I am
A hollow, mere, sunken sight
To stand, more than I can
Take me back to those special days
When I whinnied, played, and tried
Tried more than anything
To have someone look at me with pride
Now I know my time has come
As I'm chained and hung upside down
And metal weapons puncture me
And my blood flows to the ground
I only loved you
and wanted your happiness
What is it I can do?
Stand by me now, let me feel your touch
Let me know you care as much
