SLOW DOWN
©By Russ

Sitting in the quiet of my porch, looking up
at the pale moon, high in a sun lit sky.
Canned laughter comes from inside the house,
as Em sits with her glass of wine, laughing,
and unwinding from her day at work.
Silence is again broken by the rustling of leaves,
a sweet trill of a bird, which does for me that
self-same task.
A bright colored bird tugs a plum from the
tree and I hear it plop wetly in the dirt.
Angry voices rising from the lane, where it
turns back on itself, just behind our house.
As the wailing cry of a frightened child rises
up through the trees, another voice, a quiet
voice whispers in my ear, saying:
‘Slow down, slow down, take another look
around......there’s another way to see’.
Ancient memories begin their rise from deep
within and another frightened child, awakens
frightened, and starts to join in.
And again a voice whispers softly into my ear;
‘Slow down, slow down, take another look
around......there’s another way to see.
A trio of doves land softly on leaf covered
earth, pecking at specks too tiny to see, oblivious
to the unhappy sounds that fill the air and tug
at my heart.
A single engined plane drones high over head.
An orange and white cat gently bites at my arm,
as if to say;Slow down, slow down take another
look around.....there’s another way to see.
And I reach down, scratch his chin, comforting
both him and that small child within me.
