SUN AND RAIN AND SUN AGAIN

A gray squirrel stands with
hind legs clutching a limb
of the cherry tree. The snow
white patch of his under belly
blends in with the blossoms,
making him almost invisible.
The steady rythym of his
forepaws, raking blossoms and
small leaf buds into his mouth
gives his location away.
A raven in the distance, makes
a clopping sound like horses
hooves striking a paved road.
It took years before I learned
what that sound was.
The vivid yellow and green
grass on the hills is hard to
look at in the glare of the sun.
And then it dissappears quickly
into fast moving shadows, bright
colors hidden again by dark
clouds and falling rain.
My son calls to walk with me
through the storm clouds in his
world, and we talk until he too
can see the sun.
Through the window I see Em’s
spotted dove drive a young
mourning dove away, and when I
go out side the frightened dove
returns to land softy on my
shoulder. And I am pleased at
being a place of safety for this
creature, it’s all so new to me.
And so it’s sun, then rain,
clouds, and then sun, over and
over again.
