| Principal, Mr. Underkoffler, promised to dye his hair green if the students read all the way across America. They DID - a total of 3,828 miles! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Newville Elementary celebrated 'Read Across America Day' on Friday, March 2, 2001. Three weeks prior, students were challenged to 'read their way' across America from east coast to west coast. One book would equal 1 mile (grades K-2), and each 25 pages read (grades 3-5) would equal 1 mile. Students aimed to 'travel' 3000 miles on their imaginary trip, hoping to end in Disneyland, California. To everyone's delight, the students read a total of 3,828 'miles' by March 2. To celebrate the accomplishment, students dressed in 'Disney' clothing; decorated cupcakes to portray Disney characters; staff members took turns reading to each classroom dressed as a character from their book; and Mr. Underkoffler dyed his hair green (a promise he had made, hoping that the students wouldn't reach their goal). The school was also pleasantly surprised on March 2nd when Mr. Gary Wolfe, Deputy Secretary of Commonwealth Libraries, brought his favorite Dr. Seuss books and read to the kindergarten classes. Newville Elementary was chosen by Govenor Ridge for their outstanding 'Read to Succeed' program. The day was great fun for both students and staff.
