The recent formation of USIGS has created some interest in the genealogy community as well as many questions and concerns. While the goals of this organization are worthwhile the motives of those invloved have been questioned both inside and out of the group. The recent decision to remove the public email list which had become as do many such lists an email chat room with little productive interaction and make this a once a day edited summary has done little to clear the air. Many like myself would feel more comfortable in a free-for-all than a Presidential News Conference. It may be the Scot blood, but I get suspicous when someone else wants to tell me what other members are expressing. I would have favored a moderated list. That the decision was made without popular consideration does little to relieve concerns about what role the membership is play in this group. This group is very new and has great potential to influence the internet's role in genealogy research; I feel membership is a must.
