I will attempt to write out how I make these darling quilted balls.. I first saw them in Texas, bought one and came home to start production. The more I make the more I give as gifts so here goes.... You will need:
poly fiberfill, scraps of a thin batting, quilting thread, and lots of small scraps of fabrics. Be sure to use different colors.
I take a
'hunk' of the fiberfill, as big as you want your ball to be, and form it as well as you can into the shape of a ball. Cut a piece of scrap thin batting to cover it, and with quilting thread whip it around the fiberfill to form your ball. Tuck where needed. Take a piece of fabric about 2.5 x 2.5 and place right side up on ball. Leave it out flat and whip it onto the ball form. Take another piece of a different fabric, turn the one edge that will join the first piece under 1/4 inch and whip stitch it to the first piece, and the remaining 3 sides as well to the ball. Whenever you are joining 2 fabrics, turn under 1/4 inch, otherwise leave out flat. Keep doing this until your ball is all covered with different colors and patterns of scraps. Overlap the second fabric onto the first one before sewing. When you have it covered, use quilting thread, or pearl cotton thread looks great also, do a big quilting stitch 1/4 to 1/8 inch inside each square of fabric... put tension on your thread so it draws each piece up a little bit... and walla, you have a quilted ball... These make great baby gifts. I have a basket full of them on my dining room table also which looks darling. On our vacation this past August, I made 14 of these while riding in the car.. A great way to pass the time, do while watching TV or whatever... Let me know if you have any problems and I will help you. E-mail Jan at grami3@webtv.net Thanks !
