If you interested in adopting a county in South Carolina, please contact me and let me know which county interests you most. Even if a county is currently adopted, the county coordinator may wish to sign you on as a co-coordinator ! I also maintain a list of those who are interested and contact them when a county goes up for adoption.

Basic County Page Requirements

There are a few basic requirements that every county page must meet in order to be associated with our project and be included on the Master Index Page for South Carolina. The requirements are:

  1. If you have not already done so, you need to join the following lists:
    • SCGEN-L
The SCGenWeb mailing list for county coordinators. This is where we discuss all matters having to do with the project. This is presently a "closed" list and the State Coordinator should automatically subscribe you once you have joined the project. If you do not receive notification that you have been subscribed, send an email to the State Coordinator (currently vproc@ix.netcom.com ).
    • USGenWeb-All-L
mailing list for State and County Coordinators, as well as others associated with - or interested in - the project.
Send an email to USGENWEB-ALL-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe as the only text in the body of the message.

  2. Every page must have a link to the South Carolina State page (SCGenWeb). There should also be a note telling people that if they have an interest in adopting a county they should contact the state coordinator Victoria Proctor and give the email address vproc@ix.netcom.com).

  3. Every page must provide a query page. This can be handled either with a form and posted automatically, or with email to the page owner and updated manually, and both ways are being used.

  4. Every page should provide some basic research help for the county. For example, many of the county coordinators have provided a list of names, addresses and phone numbers for the county court clerk, library, and genealogical and/or historical societies. Many have also provided a bibliography page showing the reference books available for their county. Reference lookups should be offered if you and your lookup volunteers have received permission from the authors of copyrighted work to do so. You are not responsible for doing lookups or any research for anyone. You might list whatever resources you have in your personal library, offering to do lookups in them. You might also list other books that have been published on your county and ask for others that have these books to volunteer to do lookups. We support fair use but respect copyrights.

  5. You should display the SCGenWeb logo on your page as well as The USGenWeb logo.

  6. Although the following pointers are no longer mandatory since they have been placed on the Master Index Page, they are recommended for the convenience of those visiting your page.

    • Gene Stark's Index of Names for all Gen Web Sites -- (Includes all xxx County lines.)
where xxx is the name of your county
      The URL is http://www.gendex.com/gendex

    • A link to The USGenWeb Project main page is also recommended.
      The URL is http://www.usgenweb.org/

    • A link to the The USGenWeb Project Archives for South Carolina is also recommended. The South Carolina Archives Table of Contents page is located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/scfiles.htm. From this main page, follow the links to your county.
The archives search option would be another helpful link to include: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm.

Beyond these few "bare essentials", your page is yours to do with as you please. Should there be any changes made in the basic requirements, you will be notified on the mailing list and this message will be updated.

As new county pages are put up on the web, they are checked by someone on the evaluation committee for the required elements and to be sure your links work. Your evaluator will let you know when they have visited your page. If there are any problems with links or any required elements missing, they will let you know so you may make any changes or corrections. Post a message to SCGEN-L when you are ready for your page to be checked.

It is the policy of The USGenWeb Project to obtain permission from the creator of the code, graphics, and backgrounds before using them on our pages. If you find yourself having used someone's code without their permission, please either obtain that permission or remove that feature from your pages.

Download Sample Pages

I have prepared some sample pages that may be downloaded to help you prepare your pages. These are samples only and you will need to modify them to suit you and your county and state. Experiment until you are satisfied with your results... you can always download them again if you need to. Click on the Sample.zip link to download these pages and graphics. Sample.zip.
