First, gravel is not necessary for these bird's digestion! This is a common idea that was accepted years ago when it was found that some birds did swollow small stones to grind food in their gullets. If you watch these birds, they shell and grind their seed before swollowing.
Their main diet consistes
of seed. The common seed found in grocery stores for Cockatiels, Parakeets and Budgies is
a good start for these birds. Supplimental vitimins are not necessary, but it is a good
idea to allow the birds to have treats occasionally (Well maybe more than just occasionally).
This is a present from you to them,
they really enjoy these treats. Suggested treats are greens of all sorts. Lettuce, carrot tops,
and other such leafy vegitables are good. It is a common for a veteranarian to say that
celery is not good for the birds. Maybe not but Poppy, lived longer than most birds of his
species and never had any bad side effects. Other good treats are bread of all sorts and
popcorn. Actually given the chance, they will try anything right off your own plate!! It
is also thought that "junk food" (potato chips, french fies) are not good for
the bird as well. Well neither are they for you, however they love them just as much. And
I love a happy bird!
Remember that cockatiels
and Budgies have their God-given rights to their finiky behavior too! It is not uncommon
for one of these birds to love a treat one day then the very next morning be mortally
afraid of the same treat!
Remember keep all birds away from common household plants, many poisonous.
Speaking of food...
They also love the opportunity to throw what they can out the cage! Occasionally checking to be sure that gravity is still working properly! If not satisfied, they will test it again! This may be repeated several times to allow a big enough sample to come out with a mean population of tests to base their final decision upon. That is; if gravity is still working.
