Let me make it as easy as possible. It is sometimes thought that a bird will either be friendly or mean when you take it home. This is not true. In a new home the bird may be aggressive because of its unfamiliar surroundings, and until you start to train the bird, it will remain aggressive. Most birds have an easy disposition, but as with all animals, some are just mean, but that is a very rare case. To have a bird to want to come to you, play with you, and let you scratch it, expect extreme changes in one year. But you have to follow the next few items closely, then you will have a very friendly bird.
Daily, you must give the birds fresh seed. You can easily get by several days on a single dish of seed. the birds will eat the top layer of seed out of the bowls, so all you have to do is blow the shells out of the top. If the seed appears discolored or smells musty, throw that dish of seed out and replace it with some fresh seed, it may be necessary to wash the dish. Daily, you must change the water. Then once a week, wash the water container to get rid of any algee that may be formiong in the water container. If the birds can get to the water they will play in it. About every week, it is important to change the paper in the bottom of the cage, in other words.. CLEAN the cage. It is not necessary to wash the cage in water every time you clean it, most often just simply removeing the old paper liner from the bottom of the cage will be sufficient enogh. If the sides or other parts are dirty, then simply wash them off and replace those pieces.
Now these next few sections are the most important to successfully tame your bird.
First, you need to clip your bird's wings. It is not necessary to clip their wings forever, but for the first couple years, yes, keep them trimmed or you will find it almost impossible to train your bird. They will fly away from you unless you clip their wings. If you need instructions on how to clip a bird's wings CLICK HERE.
