Comments: I found a book a couple of years ago by Richard Halliburton called Book of Marvels. It is from the 40s and I got it for a buck. It blew my mind away literally, to far away places. He really is a fun and intriguing writer. Everyone should be able to get a hold of these travel stories. I typed out his name to see if I could find out more. I now know that other writings exist and a hunting I will go. Thanks.

Comments: I am also an avid Richard Halliburton collector. I grew up with his books and now I have signed editions of almost all of his work and an ever-growing collection of ephemera. I've always known there were others out there but never found anyone who would admit it.

Comments: I have a huge collection of Richard Halliburton memorabilia, and I've interviewed many of his friends and associates who are still alive (or have died in recent years). I found his books as a kid and I've loved them ever since. I'm glad to see someone is keeping his name alive. Thanks.

Comments: During a terrible bout of mono, my mother gave me her Halliburton books. There was some family connection, I believe, and I found it so sad that he died sailing off in the Chinese Junk. (Many) years later, I wanted to share these books with my son. He was mildly interested, but I'm all caught up in the Royal Road to Romance all over again. Each day I allow myself a different adventure. Halliburton had a genius for sharing his exploits, and the time elapsed only makes them more intriguing.

Comments: Nice page. My father gave me my first Halliburton book when I was a wee tot, years ago. I wanted to be him when I grew up! One of the great joys of my life was getting to know some of his family and dining with the Halliburton silverware! Many thanks for the page.

Comments: When seven years old in St Louis, Mo, my mother gave me "The Royal Road to Romance" with the passionate recommendation that I should read it - that I would enjoy this man and his wonderful writings and wonderful journeys. I had learned that too often whatever my mother liked - I disliked. So I resolved on the spot never to read it and certainly never to enjoy it. Last month at age 77 (1999), I ran across the yellowed book while cleaning out some stuff. Out of my present respect for my mother and her recommendations (which incidentally improved over time) I decided to read the book. It was out of curiousity too - I wondered what I might have missed. Well, you've read the book and know well the excitement of this man and his journeys and his descriptions. Now in spite of being far older than he at the time, I am moved to explore some of the same things he did, but they must be changed drastically since then. Still, why not! But in spite of all this uncertainty one thing is sure - my mother was right.

Comments: I discovered Richard Halliburton as a child when I happened across my (much) older brother's copy of Book of Marvels. That book was directly responsible for my own trips to the Yucatan years later to visit Chichen Itza. I'm glad to see there are many out there who appreciate this man and his work!

Comments: As a distant relative of Richard Halliburton (He was my grandmothers Uncle) I have had the oportunity to read his Book of Marvels, Royal Road to Romance andSeven League Boots. Anyone who has read the books will find many of his travels have been the basis of such movies as Indiana Jones and many others. He was a true explorer, if he had not been lost at sea in 1939 would have seen a new book about China, I just wonder what story he would have had tell.

Comments: My sixth grade teacher read to us from The Book of Marvels once a week. Oh the doors of adventure that opened to me! In the past few years I have visited many of the wondrous sites he described and brought alive for me. When I went to the Taj Mahal I asked a guide where Richard Halliburton took his moonlight swim. He said that it is surprising to hear the number of tourists that ask that question. I bought a copy of the Book of Marvels when I was twelve and I found a copy of The Flying Carpet a few years ago. I am a new grandmother now, and I hope to be able to share their magic with my grandson. I was just "emoting" last night to a sixth grade social studies teacher about the impact she can have on young lives. I hope I never lose the spirit of adventure that Mr. Halliburton inspired in me. Thank you for this web site!

Comments: As a young boy in the 1930s, I read and owned all of the books by Richard Halliburton. He awakened in me the urge to travel.I no longer have my Halliburton library. My mother disposed of it when I was in the service.I only wish I could purchase these wonderful books once again. I have been searching in used book stores, but have not located any of his wonderful travel books.

Comments: I have been a Halliburton fan since I read Royal Road to Romance in the 30's. His books of stories have changed my life. Whereever I travelled I have sought the adventure and romance of Halliburton and found it -- In W.W.II,as well as on business and pleasure trips. I have visited many sites of his adventures such as The Taj Mahal, Petra, Red Square, and many others. One evening as it was nearly dark in Petra, I met a man from Paris who was there for the same reason I was - to find Halliburton. We had a delightful talk over dinner of his travels and mine. I found Halliburton's spirit that night. During the war, I was always in hopes that Halliburton would be found on a pacific island with Amelia Erhart

Comments: My grandmother gave me Halliburton's "Complete Book of Marvels" when I was in kindergarten. I can't think of any other piece of literature that so influenced my life! The stories are as relevant as today's newspaper--witness the excitement about the possibility of finding the body of George Mallory on Mt. Everest. Halliburton's account of that ill-fated climb brought me to tears. My present home is located on the slopes of Sunrise Mountain, overlooking the Las Vegas Valley, and one of the first things I noticed when I moved here is that the summit is a miniature replica of the peak of Everest, or as Halliburton called it, "Chomo Lungma--Goddess Mother of the World." Those who recall their "Book of Marvels" lore will know that on one leg of the author's tour of the Orient, one of his fictional young traveling companions was named Tommy Davis. Little wonder that the book seemed to be written especially for me. I've seen some of the marvels for myself-- not nearly enough. But I'll always have Halliburton's vision of them to savor. What a man! Tom Davis alexlegrand@worldnet.att.net

I loved them and would really like to locate copies so I could enjoy them again. Comments: Richard Halliburton was some sort of hero to me as a boy in Kansas City. I think I read all his books and was certainly influenced by him to go on my own "Royal Road to Romance" I left home in 1944 at the age of fifteen just to see as much of the world as I could, at that time. I hitchhiked, jumped freight trains, and had many fabulous adventures, and I always thought that RH was behind the entire effort. And yes, his world was an entirely different one from now in that there still seemed to be wild adventurous things about in the 20's and 30's which would have been his time. Thank you for having this URL, it makes me feel nostalgic to say the least. Gene Wall

Comments: My wife collects Halliburton books, my father grew up reading of his adventures... Our most interesting find, and hardest to come upon book was based on a "photoplay" entitled "India Speaks", while not full of RH's prose, until the advent of Bibliofind and ABEBooks it was very difficult to locate. It's necessary for a complete collection...RH was unsuccessful in Hollywood.

It's an excellent read. Thanks for your website.

Anyone who reads him will definately be intrigued. I hope some way will transpire that future readers can have access to his wonderful books. Just as one reader expressed, I would like to lend the book out and not have to worry about the condition returned or it getting lost since these books are obviously so rare.

Comments: Caught in your web while trolling the net for Halliburton. After receiving email from another Halliburton enthusiast last year referring to family quarrel discouraging any biography about our favorite American romantic adventurer of the last century, I've been looking for stories about him and an avenue to encourage a biography by some able writer. Revisited Halliburton last year for the first time in decades, after deciding to try my own swim of the Hellespont, hoping to encourage more new readers of adventure.

I was captivated by the man whose only dream was to take us along with him on his seemingly magical adventures. He planted a seed in my heart that has blossomed into a profound love of travel and writing. I hope to someday go to some of the places that he visited but until that day i will have his memories to keep up my hopes.
