Death Yesterday of the Wife of General Charter

Mrs. Charlotte A. Charter, wife of General William M. Charter of the board of Water Commissioners, died at 6 o'clock yesterday morning at her home, 61 Lafayette Street. She had been ill from a complication of diseases for nine weeks and unconscious since Thursday.

Mrs. Charter was the daughter of Abner Smith of Scotland CT and was married to General Charter in April 1848, forty-seven years ago. They have four children, Mrs. Clare J. Winslow, the wife of ex-Dairy Commissioner Gideon D. Winslow, George H. Charter, Mrs. Emma E. Allen, the wife of Major Alexander Allen, and Mrs. Hattie L. Bunnell, the wife of Dr. W. P. Bunnell of New Britain. Mrs. Charter also leaves seven grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. J.F. Phillips of this city. She was a sister of the late Elisha T. Smith, Uriah T. Smith, and Marcus Smith of this city. All her children and grandchildren are living, her death being the first in her immediate family. Her grandchildren are: Florence L., Fred G., and Elsie M. Winslow, William R., J. Charles and Bert K. Allen, and Charlotte M. Charter.

Mrs. Charter was an affectionate mother and of a retiring disposition, always bound up in the society of her family. She was a member of the South Church. The Reverand Doctor E.P. Parker will officiate at the funeral services, which will be held at Mrs. Charter's late home at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The bearers will be the three sons-in-law, G.D. Winslow, Major Alexander Allen and Dr. W.P. Bunnell, and two nephews, Lieutenant Edgar L. Smith and Henry L. Searle. The interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
