Matthew 18:19  -  "Again I say to you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven." Don't put any limitations on that because Jesus didn't.

P.C. Nelson, who was a Greek scholar and always did all of his personal reading and private devotions from the Greek New Testament said that there were a number of idioms that could not be put into English.  There just wasn't any counterpart for them.  He said the more literal rendering of what Jesus said was, "If you shall ask anything in my name and I don't have it, then I will make it for you."

We need to read the 18th, 19th, and 20th verses to get the full effect of what Jesus is saying.  "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.  Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.  For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."  He's saying that wherever these two people are who are agreeing, He's right there to make it good.  Heaven will back us up in what we do here on earth.  We have the authority to bind and to loose.

Use the authority that has been given to you.  Don't let the devil bind you.  Instead of saying that the devil's been after you all week and you can't do anything about it, find someone who will stand in agreement with you and bind him.  There only has to be two of you.  You may be mighty in prayer alone but you can be mightier with someone joining you.  The Bible says that one will put a thousand to flight but two will put 10,000 to flight.  You can do ten times as much with someone agreeing with you as you can by yourself.

The bond that unites a man to his fellowmen is no less real and close than that which unites him to God; he is one with them.  We not only learn to say 'My Father,' but 'Our Father.'

The marks of true agreement prayer are first, there must be agreement as to the thing asked, and it must be in spirit and in truth.  In other words, it has to be more than just the consent to agree.  In this kind of agreement it will become very clear what exactly we are asking, and whether we are asking according to God's will, and then whether we are ready to believe that we have received what we have asked.

The second is the gathering in, or into, the Name of Jesus.  His name must be the center to which believers gather and the bond that makes them one. 'Where two or three come together in my Name, there am I with them.' Matthew 18:20.  It is the presence of Jesus that gives the prayer of agreement its power.

The third mark is, the sure answer: 'It will be done for you by my Father in heaven.'  When any of us has distinct needs in which we feel too weak to exercise the needed faith, we need to seek strength in the help of others.  In the unity of faith and of love and of the Spirit, the power of the name and presence of Jesus acts more freely and the answer comes more surely.  How we can tell that there has been true agreement in prayer is by the fruit, the answer  -  receiving what we have asked for.
 

Father, I thank You for the promise given by Jesus that when we are gathered together in His name we can ask and it will be done for us by You.  I pray for Your people and for every small group of those who meet together that they may be one.  I pray that You would remove all selfishness and self interest and anything else that might cause that unity to be hindered.  Cast out the spirit of the world and the flesh.  Let the thought of Your presence Jesus and the Father's favor draw us all nearer to each other.  I pray that Your people Lord may believe that it is by the power of agreeing prayer that they can bind and loose in heaven; that devils can be cast out, that souls can be saved, that mountains can be removed and that Your kingdom coming can be hastened; and that Your name and Word might be glorified.
