As a rule, the people who wrote Portuguese documents tended to spell out the numbers, rather than
use digits. That being the case, here is a quick look at what sorts of things you are likely to see when
you look at a Portuguese date. I only included cardinal numbers up to 19. If your ancestors married
more than 19 times or had more than that many children, you're on your own.

CREATING DAYS OF THE MONTH
"aos" means "on the" ... "a" means "the"
Put either of the above expessions in front of the following examples to get such expressions as
"On 11 January 1897", or "27 March 1865"

1st-9th days of the month = (column 1) dias do mes de (month)
example: 05 January = cinco dias do mes de janeiro

10th-19th days of the month: (column 2) dias do mes de (month)
example: 13 January = treze dias do mes de janeiro

20th or 30th day of the month: (column 3) dias do mes de (month)
example: 30 January = trinta dias do mes de janeiro

21st-29th, 31st days of the month: (column 3) e (column 1) dias do mes de (month)
example: 25 January = vinte e cinco dias do mes de janeiro

CREATING YEARS
"do ano de" means "in the year of"
Put it in front of the following examples to get an expression such as "in 1876".

Even centuries: mil e (column 1) centos
example: 1800 = mil e oito centos

Century + 1-9 years: mil e (column 1) centos e (column 1)
example: 1903 mil e nove centos e tres

Century + 10-19 years: mil e (column 1) centos e (column 2)
example: 1718 = mil e sete centos e dezoito
