FOOTNOTES:
1. The three festival days: The Council of Trent (see 2, below) demanded three days' festival before a wedding could take place. In these three days, people who objected to the wedding on any grounds were expected to make their opinions known. This is apparently the equivalent of the "speak now or forever hold their peace" in modern Catholic wedding services.

2. The Sacred Council of Trent: After the Protestant split with Catholicism (mid-1500's), the Catholic Church convened a general council at Trent to re-affirm what Catholicism stood for. Among the Council's achievements was a clear "how-to" guide for the Catholic sacramental rituals (baptism, marriage, etc.).
