My ancestors' attempt to populate the world with illegitimate children seems to have peaked in the generation following Luiz Antonio Gomes (see below). He and his wife had at least 10 children. So far, I have found records of only four of them producing offspring. These four, all daughters, account for 9 children (including my great-grandfather) and 0 marriages. This family tradition has lasted since at least the middle of the 18th century, and has successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean, as evidenced by my paternal grandfather's birth in New Bedford, Massachussetts, in 1915.
