The Family of John and Emma Stacey
John STACEY (1839-1890) and Emma Jane NEWBERRY (1846-1896) were
married in Upton Parish in Torquay, Devon, England on April 22, 1865. John
Stacey was the son of Elizabeth (née PERKIN) and Philip STACEY of the village
of Merton in north Devon, but he eventually moved closer to the Cornish border
and found work with Emma`s father (Richard NEWBERRY) in the west Devon village
of Marystow, Emma`s birth place. Emma`s mother was Priscilla (née MASON) who
came from the neighbouring village of Kelly.
We do not yet know why John and Emma moved to the coastal resort of Torquay, but we do know that their three eldest children were born there, in two separate parishes:
Dec. 31, 1865 - Charles `Charlie` Newberry STACEY, born in Upton Parish
June 22, 1867 - John `Jack` STACEY, Jr., born in Upton Parish
March 14, 1869 - Lydia `Liddie` Priscilla STACEY, born in St. Marychurch Parish
On the 11th of May, 1871, the family arrived in Canada and settled on their own land by Prestonvale Road near the village of Courtice in Darlington Township, Durham County, Province of Ontario.
John`s sister Grace STACEY (Mrs. Thomas Veale / Veal) had arrived in Canada with her own family only a year or two before. The Veale family had settled near the small Ontario farming community called Courtice which was located in Durham County just east of Toronto. It is believed that Grace`s husband, Thomas VEALE, had relatives who had settled in the area several years earlier.
There is much evidence pointing to a close relationship between the two couples. Of the nine STACEY children born in Courtice, five were delivered by Grace VEAL(E) née STACEY (according to the official birth registrations):
August 21, 1871 - Mrs. Short delivered Samuel `Sam` Henry STACEY.
August 30, 1873 - Mrs. Short delivered Mary Elizabeth STACEY
September 27, 1875 - Mrs. Veal delivered William `Bill` George STACEY
October 9, 1877 - Mrs. Grace Veal delivered Emma Jane STACEY
February 12, 1880 - Dr. Bryant delivered Bessie Ann STACEY
March 26, 1882 - Mrs. Grace Veal delivered Edward `Ed` STACEY
September 11, 1884 - Mrs. Veal delivered Walter `Walt` STACEY
January 25, 1886 - Mrs. Veal delivered Ruba `Ruby` Beatrice `Bea` STACEY
May 17, 1888 - Dr. Belt delivered Richard Henry `Harry` STACEY
Sadly, John and Emma Stacey both died quite young in the 1890s (ages 51 and 50), as did Grace and Thomas Veale. The two couples are buried in Bowmanville Cemetery in two neighbouring plots.
