Astrid's favourite

Movies around the World

I have a special weakness for movies (see The Internet Movie Database, now also known as IMDb Ltd., for excellent information). And please SEARCH your own favourite movies, actors, directors, etc. etc. (If in North America, you might want to search here instead.)

A good script gets all my respect, and a special admiration for great directors. I am especially attached to movies directed by Frederico Fellini of Italy, Lina Wertmueller of Italy (and Switzerland), Akira Kurosawa of Japan, and I have seen some I really liked which were directed by Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino, all of United States, and Carlos Diegues who made Bye Bye Brazil (Brazil 1980).

Australia / New Zealand has come out with some amazing films these last few years. Ones which specifically come to mind include P.J. Hogan's film Muriel's Wedding (Australia 1994), Stephan Elliott's wild display, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, (Australia 1994), and the Jane Campion films, An Angel at my Table (New Zealand 1990) and The Piano (Australia/New Zealand 1993).

Other movies that come to mind have included several British films including Four Weddings and a Funeral (wasn't Rowan Atkinson, a.k.a. "Mr. Bean", great as the Catholic priest?), Sense and Sensibility, Truly Madly Deeply, and The Ruling Class. Movies from France, Italy, Spain, Mexico can be so romantic ... or provoking... (Spain 1992), Like Water for Chocolate (Mexico 1992), and Il Postino, a movie about a romantic postman who perfectly shows the odd paradox of great strength in humble courage. (A comment to my friends and family: Hey, I understand it, I didn't say I know how to practise it!) Yes. Definitely. This great film was nominated for Best Picture this year.
And, no, of the films La Grande Bouffe (France/Italy 1973), Last Tango in Paris (Italy/France 1973), or Harold and Maude, nor The Last Temptation of Christ (1988, directed by Martin Scorsese), none of them offended me.

And, yes, I really enjoy film festivals, whether in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or Cannes, even if I rarely get to go to any... *sigh*
