Great Pyrenees

A lot of people have been asking about my dogs. So here's a page about them :) the following information is from "Eyewitness Handbooks-dogs".

Sometimes confused with the Pyrenean Mastiff, this enourmous yet elegant breed can be distinguished by the color of its markings, which may be badger, wolf gray, or pale yellow. However it is often all white with distinctive black eye rims. The coarse coat enables it to withstand the severest climactic condition.

History:Of ancient (2000 BC), French origin, this breed is thought to have descended from the old heavy shepherd dogs found in the Pyrenees [mountains].

Remark:This giant takes three to four years to reach full maturity.

Other Names:Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Chien des Pyre`ne`es.

Height:26-32 inches (65-81 cm)

Weight:90-125 lbs (41-57 kg)

Temperment:Watchful, loyal

First use: guarding sheep

This is a poem about the Pyrs. I did not write it, it was composed by Highland Ranch (link below)

It is time, my master, shall we go tend the flock out in the snow?
We've taken this path many times before, in weather ten below or more.
The valleys are quiet and all is still. The flock graze high upon the hill.
New fallen snow covers the ground. The wind is the only invading sound.
Yet I feel uneasy and rightly so-something pricks my ears up though.
A distant howl, a closer scent. These are the things that I resent.
I sense it is time for me to depart, to do my evening work of art.
A sudden shadow passes in flight and I move ahead to intercept at right.
A predator is no match, you see. We have crossed this path many times, him and me.
A warning growl, teeth on display, a majestic stance and he's on his way.
The flock is safe, both young and old, although that visitor is so bold.
He will wait for another chance to try, but he will have to pass my friends and I.
I will take my stand here tonight, the flock ever in my watchful sight.
A Great Pyrenees, I stand true to my name.
I will love and protect, if you do the same.

My dogs: I have four great pyrs of my own. The oldest is Sasha, she is 10 years old. The second oldest is Kelly (registered as Lady Kelly of 7 acres), she is 6 years old. The third is a male, named Riley (registered Paddy O' Riley), he is 16 months old and was born on St. Patrick's Day. The fourth is Corby, he is 3 months, and a male. Kelly recently had a litter of 3 pups, Corby is one of hers. Maybe someday I'll have their pictures up here.
