An Interview with boyzone: Preferences (Copyright © August '98 Ma'ariv Lanoar Magazine)
SHANE: "I think a No. 1 hit single, because it brings you straight to the headlines and helps sell out a tour later on anyway."
MIKEY: "A sold-out tour. It's much more fun."
RONAN: "A No. 1 hit single can draw attention for about two weeks and then people forget all about it. An arena packed with thousands of people would be remembered for much longer.< Anyway, both those things can't exist without each other."
KEITH: "I'd prefer a good No. 1 single, because that's what sells out tours eventually."
STEPHEN: "I think a successful tour is much more important, because it means that people left their houses, bought tickets and came to see you. You can always hear a single on the radio or when you happen to turn on your TV."
What do you prefer: All Saints or the Spice Girls?
SHANE: No doubt about it - All Saints. Aside from their music, we're also friends with them, so there's realy no doubt about who I prefer!"
MIKEY: "All Saints, because I think All Saints and Boyzone have a lot in common, both as bands and as people. But I must admit I also like the Spice Girls."
RONAN: "No doubt about it - All Saints. The Spice Girls seems like nice girls and they even brought us all birthday presents, but their music isn't really my cup of tea (Yet another thing we both have in common.. :P). I really love All Saint's music, though."
KEITH: "All Saints. We worked with them five years ago when they were just a duo. They've gotten through a lot since then and it's about time to give them the credit that they deserve for their music and for what they've accomplished." (Stephen chose not to comment.)
Robbie Williams or Gary Barlow?
SHANE: "Here I must say I have no preference. I don't know them so well and music-wise I like both their albums."
MIKEY: "I think Gary Barlow. Robbie Williams seems like a nice guy, but I think I'd have a lot more in common with Gary."
RONAN: "Gary and I are really good friends and we both spend a lot of time together. Robbie also seems like a nice guy to get along with, but I'm closer to Gary than I am to him. I also like the music that he produces and listen to his album all the time."
Tattoos or earrings?
SHANE: "I have both those things on different parts of my body (..) but I have a lot more tattoos, so I guess I prefer them."
MIKEY: "I like both those things, but there are parts of my body that I wouldn't dare to put either of those things on."
RONAN: "The closet I've ever gotten to having earrings are the ones I have in my left ear. I have one tattoo on my arm and I might get another one someday."
KEITH: "I definitely like earrings more. Even though I only have one in my ear, and I have several tattoos, I plan to pierce my eyebrow and maybe even my belly-button. (Ye-owww!)
STEPHEN: "I like nice little tattoos, even though I don't want to get another one in addition to the one I already have. Getting a tattoo was a very painful experience. By the way, I don't recommend for anyone to get a tattoo, unless you've told your parents first. I didn't, and my mother nearly had a heart attack when she saw mine.."
What do you enjoy more: When you're with family or when you're with friends?
SHANE: "It depends on where I am. If I'm going out to a pub then I'd definitely prefer to be with my friends, but if I want to relax, have a nice dinner and be spoiled silly then I'd want to be with my family!
STEPHEN: "You need both things. Your family is there for your strength and your friends for support. A person needs good, supportive friends and family to be happy."
During vacations, do you prefer relaxing in the sun or going on an adventurous trip?
SHANE: "Always adventure. Just relaxing in the sun doesn't do anything for me. I like to travel - I'm a curious person. I might be missing lots of things like real feelings of peace, but it's just my character."
MIKEY: "I enjoy doing both things. I wouldn't lay in the sun all day and not do anything. If I'm offered a fun day that would include something like water-skiing I wouldn't refuse."
RONAN: "Just adventurous trips. I hate the sun - that's why my skin is pale. I don't know the term "doing nothing", even during holidays and vacations."
KEITH: "Holiday-wise, it's a complete waste of time. Instead of lying for hours in the sun next to the pool you can stay at home and listen to music. If we're talking about a trip, I won't give up a road trip in Africa, for example."
STEPHEN: "I always prefer adventures and trips. I like mountain-climbing and rafting and every opperatunity I get - I think of new sites that I can climb or raft in."
Are you a morning or an evening type?
SHANE: "Somewhere in the middle. I don't like getting up too early or too late."
MIKEY: "I think I'm a normal type and normal types don't like mornings!"
RONAN: "I am totally an evening type. I hate mornings. Sometimes I have to get up at eight in the morning and that's a very difficult thing for me to do."
KEITH: "I'm more of a night type. I'm at my peek after midnight!"
STEPHEN: "I'm more of an evening type although I'm perfectly capable of waking up early in the morning if I have to - I have no problem with that at all. As soon as I'm up I can function properly."
Are you capable of keeping a secret?
RONAN: "I'm not a secretive type (Sorry for butting in again, but ex-squueeeeze me? What was the Yvonne thing all about, huh?). But if someone tells me something and asks that it remains between the both of us I'll respect the person's wishes.
KEITH: "I tell secrets, but only the ones about myself. If something happens to me and I feel it must remain a secret, I'll tell someone about it eventually because I just don't care."
STEPEHN: "I'm good at keeping secrets, but if someone tells me something that could hurt someone else I'll warn both that person that told me the secret and the person that might get hurt."
What do you like doing more: Giving or recieving?
STEPHEN: "I always give more than I receive. There's this one girl fan that keeps buying me all these little presents, so one day I went to a shop and bought her expensive perfume. I hope she'll like it."
In a few more years time, will you be sworn bachelors or ideal family men? Ronan, Keith and Shane - don't bother answering..
MIKEY: "I hope to get married really soon and I even think I'm ready for marriage. If you things and people you love gently and considerably, I don't think you should have a problem getting married."
STEPHEN: "I'm not thinking of marriage at all right now. I'll leave the answer to God and to time."
