MY FLOWERS

(Many thanks to Diana for scanning all my pictures for me!)

The spring of 1997 was the first year I decided to add more flowers to my house. For the 2 years prior, all we had were marigolds. My husband prepared a rectangular sized section on the side of our house. He enclosed it with railroad ties and a little white picket fence. We also put up some orange butterflies that my father-in-law made. It really adds a nice touch to our house!

Our marigolds were planted in rows in this section. This area receives a good amount of sun, which was perfect for them because they require lots of sun. The first 2 years we bought the plants, it cost us a bit of money. This year we decided to use the seeds from last year's plants.

A friend of mine gave me two wild daisy plants last year. I love watching them bloom every spring until fall. I planted these in my flower section too.

I planted all different kinds of wildflowers in this section also. Most in rows. But I think next year I will scatter them more. I couldn't begin to tell you all their names. But it was awesome to watch them bloom, never knowing what kind would come up! I planted wildflowers in a small section in the backyard also. Only tiny white flowers bloomed.

My husband and I went out and bought two rectangular window sill boxes for some flowers. I decided on petunias. We also bought two hanging plant holders. We put petunias in one and a variety of mixed flowers in the other.

In the fall of 1996, I bought over a dozen tulip bulbs from my niece. They were planted in the front yard and were so beautiful when they bloomed. They didn't last very long, but I was told this beforehand. See my daffodils and others in 1998.

My husband planted some tea rose bushes. They are tiny little roses and when they are in full bloom, there are dozens and dozens on one bush. For some reason, these don't last very long either so I made sure I took their picture during full bloom.

Also in the garden alongside our fence, I planted over 30 sunflowers. I got the seeds in 1996 from my sister-in-law, which she got from her sunflowers. Gradually I thinned them out. I didn't get as many flowers as I had hoped. Most of them were only a few feet tall. A few of them were maybe over 4 feet tall. This sunflower was my best one! We have neighbors down the street who had some that were as tall as their garage!! I was told to plant them mid-end May.
