Gloria Odom,
I am very thankfull for your great page on the Ayres Familys. I have
lately gotten interested in this area, more just out of curiosity than any
delusion that any person is better than anyone else because of his
relatives or family.
Anyway, my fathers sister had a geneology done, which I read, that
said we were descended from John Ayres, founder of Brookfield,
MA. My mother recently gave me some family documents that
include an old paper, framed, on very old oil stained paper, and
in brown faded fountain pen ink. The following is transcript:
Children of Moses and Lucy Ayres
Lucy Ayres born Sept 23, 1777
Dolla Ayres born July 29, 1779
John Ayres born Sept 16, 1781
James Ayres born Sept 27, 1783
Josiah Ayres born Oct 27, 1785
And Deeiaji July 11, 1786
Isaac Ayres born May 27, 1787
Josiah Ayres born Sept 13, 1789
Lydia Ayres born May 21, 1792
Moses Ayres, Father to
The above Children born Jan 30, 1751.
A true copy as of the record appears
Attested John Potter, Town Clerk
Brookfield Jan 27th 1802
This document is signed by the town clerk. This would appear to disagree
with the man in the online documents who raves against Moses Ayres as not
being from Brookfield, nor being a descendent of Capt. John Ayres. I
personally do not care except to reach the truth, and the truth would appear
to contradict this man's opinion.
Perhaps you are interested in this information, or you might know someone
who would have some information that would help me to find corroboration for
this information.
Regards,
Larry Ayres

Goodmorning Larry,
Nice to meet another AYRES cousin! Your signed, oil paper copy,
attested by John Potter, Town Clerk in 1802, PREDATES the book below by
almost seventy years... hang on to it! I'm sure that these dates could
also be verified today from town records, as the book shows the same
dates as your paper with only two differences that I could see:
1- Where your copy says "Dolla" the book says "Dolly"
2- Your list includes Deeiaji with birth date, and this person is not
included in the list for the book - which probably means the book is in
error.
The book compiled by Whitmore, while not error-free, has been VERY
HELPFUL to researchers of the line.
Here is what I have in my possession:
From the book: A Record of the Descendants of Captain John Ayres of
Brookfield, Mass.; by William Henry Whitmore; Boston: Printed by T. R.
Marvin & Son, 1870.
I will include here the info. that is directly related to you. I
believe I have the full pages for the beginning of this book included on
my home page, which maybe you have already seen there...

There you have it, and there it ends in Mr. Whitmore's book. The New
England area is one of the best documented for early years, so I imagine
Mr Whitmore found his dates from the vital records of various towns and
also used pertinent documents to help support his claims. You notice
that not ALL the vital records are included, as some may not be
available, but other sources probably supported the evidence. Also, Mr.
Whitmore did NOT follow ALL the lines of descent - only those he could
"find" or someone gave him the info.; this is NOT a complete reference
book; there is some info. he also "omitted," for whatever reason.
I have not tried to "PROVE" any of this information, just share it for
your benefit. It's a good beginning...

Gloria,
Thank you for the quick response, and the elaborated geneology. So it
appears that the person raving against Moses Ayres being a descendent of
Capt. John was in error, or confused, or there were multiple Moses Ayres, of
different origins. The man who didn't like moses was, in the boston
transcripts on your home page.
I rechecked the record and Dolla, could not have been confused with Dolly
as the a is very clear. As for the other child with the unusual name, I
think she died, as they put her on the page indented and without the last
name Ayres, as if she were less important, or put their only for
completeness purposes.
How would I proceed to fill in the gaps from Moses to My Father and his
father Isaac ? I have no birth certificate for my father but know his
birthdate and that he lived in West Roxbury, near Boston. He had a sister
Carolyn. His name was Atherton. I am told that Atherton was his mothers
family name. I am not sure if records were in Boston, or the locality.
Please feel free to post this on your home page, and any help would be
gratefully appreciated, as has been yours.
Regards,
Larry Ayres
