SALEM A. TILFORD, M.D., was born in Jefferson County, Ind., February 2,
1827, with good opportunities for education in the Madison High School. In
1845, he took up the study of medicine under Dr. J. H. D. Rogers, of
Madison; afterward attended lectures at the University of Louisville, and
the Indiana Medical college, at Indianapolis; graduated from the latter,
and took the ad eundem degree in 1879. In 1848, he located here and has
continued his practice successfully. November 28, 1849, he married Miss Ann
Wolfe, which union was favored with eleven children--Isabel, Benjamin W.,
Lulie, Jennie, Ann, Alex S., Mary, Joseph W., Amanda, Harry and Roy E. Dr.
Tilford was a Whig, but afterward became a Republican; was zealous during
the war, but later affiliated with the Democrats, by which party he was
elected,in 1870, Auditor of Morgan County, having served about eighteen
months previously as said officer. Dr. Tilford is a Chapter Mason. When he
came first to this town there were only 350 souls therein.
