Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

March 19, 1998

Last year, I had visited a site of a fellow bibliophile. She and I share a love of mysteries and she recommended the books of Robert B. Parker to me. The name sounded familiar, so I checked my home library. Yes, there in my section of about 200 unread books were two by this author.

Now, as you may know by earlier entries, I do not watch very much television. However, I do read about different shows and from my past readings, I think that these books were the basis for the series Spenser for Hire.

Late yesterday afternoon I picked up Parker's Looking for Rachel Wallace. I loved this guy! A literary P.I.! I finished the book last night and my only regret is that I only have one other book of Parker's in my library to read. (If we weren't currently without transportation, that wouldn't be so much of a problem. But, I'm both broke and without a ride to the library.)

I'm going to go back to my books I've read pages within the next few days and do some editing. Because I have a Christian site, I feel that I should put a rating system on the books I've read. The kids books are automatically rated G. But, many of the adult books I read have sex and violence in them which might offend some of the Christians who visit here. There is one book that I am going to rate X because the sex and violence (especially/mostly the violence) nauseated me. And when I finally finish Swan Song, I will also rate it X because some of the violent scenes. It contains more than one violent scene that turned my stomach. (Which also explains why I am taking forever to finish it.

I read horror books. I like the genre as a rule. And 99 times out of 100, good triumphs over evil. (That's one of my Christian ethics--good will eventually win.) I am sure that at the end of Swan Song good will win out over evil. But I've found a lot of the story to be depressingly pessimistic.

The other book that I am going to rate X didn't even have that going for it. Good did NOT win out over evil and the sadism in the book was too disgusting for me.

I am putting the rating system in because I know that there are Christians out there who believe that any sex in a book makes it a tainted book. There are those that do not realize that you can read a book without becoming titillated by it's content. So, I will rate the book I read yesterday, R. For, an extreme right-winged person might not enjoy a book where the hero is out to rescue a feminist lesbian.

I also read 3 mini-books by R. L. Stine last night. Hersheys had given out a tri-fold folder with short-stories bound as 2" x 2" mini-books. (What was in the folders along with the mini-books, or what you had to buy to get them, I don't know. My brother gave the folders to the kids as gifts.) They were cute. Carrie wouldn't read them, though. Carrie frightens easily and last year her therapist said that she shouldn't be allowed to watch horror movies or read scary books. (She was having a lot of nightmares at the time.)

I get a little extra free time today! Bryan is on a basketball team at the school and all the kids are staying after school for the game--students against the teachers. So, I'd better get busy and get my chores done so I have some extra time to read!
