Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

April 25, 1998

I probably won't upload until tomorrow. After a week of "let's put away the winter clothes and get the shorts out" weather, it's been a fiercely windy day. The kind of day that makes my son ask, "Ma, do we get tornados here [in Vegas]? Are you sure?"

Not that it COULDN'T, just that the odds are tremendously against that happening here.

I made all the kids lay down for a nap today. Then I fell asleep and stayed asleep longer than any of them. [It's a good thing Delton was home.]

Last night was a late night for everyone. Faye and Delton went out and stayed out until about 2:30. Carrie and Bryan stayed up until the wee hours--at school!

The elementary school in our neighborhood is only in it's second year. Last year and this year they've held a Reading Night sleep-over. Only there isn't that much reading done. This year they had activities until 10 PM. Then there was a book-on-tape played for the kids as they settled down to go to sleep.

Last year went rather smoothly from Carrie's report of her sleepover last April. But, this year I heard that the boy's snuck into the multi-media room where the girls were sleeping. The principal had to break-up a fight with 3 girls. [A girl was in the middle with two other girls playing "make a wish" with her hair.] It sounded a bit rowdy.

It's a tad expensive, too. Stephanie couldn't go because she was being punished. [She had gone to a friends house without reporting to me after school on Tuesday--and when Bryan came home after basketball practice without her--I got panicky. She was supposed to have walked home with Johnny and Carrie and should have been home with them at 3:35. This was almost 5. She was found playing in the garage of a friend a block and a half away. I was ready to ground her for a month for scaring me so badly. I settled for her not going to the sleepover.] For Bryan and Carrie to spend from 6 PM to 8 AM at the school, it cost $10 each. That was to cover the cost of pizzas, drinks, ice cream and donuts for breakfast.

Carrie got her money's worth though. She had 7 slices of pizza, a drink, an ice cream sandwich and 2 donuts! ;-) Bryan said there were 90 pizzas there!

On the homefront, I let Johnny and Stephanie stay up until 11 as well. I also was taking care of a friend's 13 year old daughter until 11. I made the error of allowing them to watch a scary movie. Mostly because we all like some horror movies [Day of the Triffids is pretty popular around here.] and we don't get to watch them if Carrie is watching TV. Carrie's therapist says that scary movies are too intense for her and her TV watching has to be carefully monitored.

But, John was the one with bad dreams last night. He came downstairs while I was on the computer and he got into my big recliner and went to sleep. I escorted him [I'll carry him from my bed to his bed if he's fallen asleep watching TV--but, he's too heavy for me to carry up the stairs now.] up to bed.

About 3 AM--just I was falling to sleep--he came into my room. I relented and let him go to sleep in my bed. Then I got up at 7:30 and made myself stay up so that I could be sure to waken Delton if it looked like he wasn't going to be up in time to pick up Bryan and Carrie from the school.

Even with a nap, it seems like it's been a long day.

But, I'm going to retire early tonight. And I'll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed tomorrow.

On second thought, maybe I'll stay up just a little bit longer. Faye and Delton have gone out and won't be back for hours and the kids are all asleep.

I think I'll just relax and enjoy the blessed silence!
