Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

April 27, 1998

The Aladdin was imploded around 7:30 this evening. [They destroyed the old building to make room for a new mega-resort--still to be called the Aladdin.]

The coverage from the local ABC station was very impressive. They had cameras inside the hotel, outside on a balcony and on the roof, at ground level inside the buffer zone, across the street and in the air.

It's amazing to see a building that has been a fixture on the Strip go from existing to rubble in about 8 seconds.

The explosions went off in the hotel and the hotel caved in on itself ever so gracefully. Like poetry in motion.

We have watched and taped the coverage of the Dunes implosion and the Hacienda implosion. I taped the coverage of this one right after the coverage of the Hacienda footage.

I don't know when the company will get tonight's pictures up, but if you go to The Las Vegas Review-Journal's site, there are quick-time movies of the other 4 implosions: the Landmark, the Dunes, the Sands and the Hacienda. If you wait too long after tonight, you might have to search the archives for them.

I haven't been all through the site since it's remodeling, but, it looks like a fabulous site for planning a trip to Las Vegas.

The Aladdin didn't knock down the Performing Arts Center. But, it will also be closed for intensive remodeling.

I've never really been to the Aladdin. I walked through it once to get to the Performing Arts Center. A lot of the high schools hold their commencement ceremonies there...and that's where my sister Frances received her diploma.

Finally. Silence. I guess that the implosion was just too much excitement for the boys. My son, in particular, has been rowdy and rambunctious after being sent to bed at 8:30.

Wanna make a bet that he won't want to get up for school tomorrow? He'll be moaning and groaning and saying that he doesn't feel well.
