Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

September 3, 1998

Well, we got win 95 back. Only this time it's a tad different. And there are certain things that I don't understand.

First, while I am considered to be almost a computer expert by some of my family and friends...that's only because they don't have much experience on the computer themselves. I also have the ability to retain some of what I've learned the hard way. (But Delton's the real "expert" in the house.)

While we didn't lose the D drive, the D drive is the one that was backed up most frequently. And while some of the programs that were in C drive were saved...a lot weren't because we don't have a zip drive and the files were too large.

Something I am planning on backing up this time is the .dll files that I've had to find and install again. And some of the fonts. We lost a lot of fonts and I've found some interesting ones to replace them with...although it would have been better if I could have supplemented the ones we had.

I don't understand, tho', why we can't get the toolbar to look and work the way it did the first time I installed it. The appearance is totally different. It won't save the changes made to it's configuration files. It comes up as a horizontal bar even though when it was installed before, it was a vertical bar. I originally downloaded and used it because I wanted to clear the desktop. Now the desktop is the easier alternative. At first, I thought it was because when I went back to the site and downloaded another copy, it was a different version. So, I got the floppy that I originally had copied as a backup and it's working the same way. I just don't get it. I even went into the .ini file and changed it to read differently. I saved it. And when it closed up, it went back to the original configuration.

I also think that as long as I have to gather some of my bookmarks again, I might as well update some of the links on my site.

I was very upset yesterday, though. I went to the microsoft site. In spite of the fact that I have been downloading files for almost two years, I decided that I would try to follow the instructions written on their site. I figured that it was their files I was downloading, so, I should do it their way. Big mistake!! And as soon as I clicked on the link, my connection was lost and the general fault error screen comes on, Netscape closes up. When I try to connect again, I get an error screen telling me that my dial-up adapter is no longer functioning. I end up removing and reinstalling the adapter.

I fiddle around with some of the sound files. When I shut down the computer, it's Majel Roddenberry's voice that says, "Auto shutdown sequence in progress." But, with all the things that I have done and still have to do, the opening sound bite is now most appropriate: "Good morning! You have won another fabulous 8 hour day, chained to this machine!"
