Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

September 15, 1998

I think part of the trouble that people have with the holiday seasons is that the stores start their promotions too early.

It's pretty bad when the kids notice and remark, "Gee, their selling Halloween and Thanksgiving stuff already?"

The only reason I ever get depressed during holiday season is because I'm always too broke to get what I'd like for the family. And sometimes I even manage to do alright there if I plan things well.

A couple of years ago, Johnny wanted a beanbag chair for Christmas. He started talking about it at the end of summer. I had a little money and bought a 101 Dalmation beanbag chair on sale around Thanksgiving. I could relax during December.

Holidays may mean a lot of work; but, I manage that easily enough most years.

The pumpkin pies get their start the week after Halloween, when I cook, mash, and freeze the pulp from the Halloween pumpkins.

A couple of years ago, we had a guest that my brother brought along for Thanksgiving. (We've served buffet style all through the years, so one more or several more are seldom a problem.) After the main meal was served, the pies were brought out. When offered some pumpkin pie, this guest refused stating that the pies had so many additives and stuff that it wasn't healthy to eat them.

"I beg your pardon!" I said in a loud (but, not shouting...this was a guest after all) voice. I'll have you know that I cut, cooked, and mashed the pumpkin for these pies myself. And I baked them from scratch. There are NO preservatives in my pies!"

A looked rather sheepish as he explained that he meant no offense. It was just that he was a diabetic and it was a way of talking himself out of wanting to eat the pie. Apologies were given and accepted all around.

I know that I wrote that I'd get back to writing regularly once the kids were back to school. But, I'm going to take a week or two off (unless I find something that really makes me want to make an entry right now) to get caught up with some other stuff. Such as the Hot Links for Kids site that I'm volunteered to keep up with the link changes on and have gotten behind on. I also need to check the links on my pages as well. And maybe try to take the watermark off a few more pages on my site.

I also need to get caught up with some things around the house (I removed the mildew stains around the bathtub yesterday...thrilling,eh?).

If you'd like to be notified of my next update e-mail me.
